Was it the same Talbot who less than 50 years earlier were making these?

Sort of. The history is hideously complex as there were two Talbot companies running in parallel. One in the UK and one in France. The UK one Talbot Darracqb became part of Sunbeam who became part of the Rootes group; who were then bought by Chrysler. The French one Talbot Lago became part of the Simca group who were then bought by Chrysler.

Does anyone else get a clattering sound in their head simply by looking at that picture??
We had one of those for a few years in, oh, must have been the last 1990s when they were already thinning out rapidly. I know a lot of them sounded as if they were coming to pieces but the engine on mine was really very good: it had none of the alarming ticky clatter, and pulled both smoothly and as strongly as anyone's nominal 85 bhp.

While in no way a sporting prospect it was extremely well thought out and practical family transport and absurdly comfy. Its Frenchness was most evident, it was the closest thing to a more modern Renault 16.
My grandfather had one of these as I grew up.

finally traded it in around 2000 when the wheel departed the hub on a roundabout. I don't remember it being particularly bad or good, but I haven't seen another since!

We had the saloon version, the Solara, for about 5 years from 1980-85 as a family car.

I remember it being underpowered (72hp version of the 1.6), rolled a lot in corners, was terminally dull to look at and sit inside, and the engine was very rattly. Ventilation was also rubbish. It also rode on 165 section tyres so had little grip.

Even by the standards of the day it was extremely dull and dynamically mediocre.

With the best will in the world, the colour is a bit sudden for me but it's a very pretty thing I think.
Surely a S2000 is the better buy or the Z4 Mk1 or the Boxster S?
I'd go retro and have a 944 cabrio myself.
As someone said above, not for the £900 they want for that Pug, you wouldn't

That Rover looks great, even what, 30 years on? Daily?

Yes, it is 32 years old, has done just over 41,00 miles (vouched for by documents), and is pretty much my daily (although I use other old sheds as well). I have used the RovaDaytona for several long trips without any serious probs. The reversing lights have been staying on just lately - maybe a dodgy switch, or summat.

This must have been the dog's bks back in '73.

Ooops, just noticed that it's a "modern" engine, but it still looks awesome. I'm sure that it doesn't go as well as it looks, but if it did....driving

It will probably go ok with a 1.8 zetec on carbs but will it stop?

"Dodge" it is named and "dodge" I instinctively would if I saw that bearing down on me. Wrong in every conceivable way, and therefore almost irresistably appealing.

The swing-out tailgate is hilarious. "Excuse me, would you mind moving your car back seven feet? I need to open my boot".

What's scary is, thats a decent price for those. Id be tempted to put them in mine but they don't really match the colour of the car.
