1979 Rover SD1 V8 Manual - £2750

Engine "has a suspected head-gasket after a water pump failure..." but it might just be a borked water pump.

BMW in "resists car bloatage" SHOCKA. Most cars that have gone through several iterations have become heyewaaaargely mahoarsive compared to their old selves, but 2014 Bimmerfive not a whole lot bigger than 1990 Bimmerfive:

I beg to differ. It's almost exactly as large as my E38 Seven.

F10: Length: 490 cm, Width: 186 cm and Height: 146 cm.
E38: Length: 498 cm, Width: 186 cm and Height: 144 cm.
E34: Length: 472 cm, Width: 175 cm and Height: 138 cm

E34 is slim, F10 is, well not fat, but bigger, albeit not huge, Still the best looking modern BMW in the current range, imo of course.

Can't remember when I saw a Scorpio last time, and they were everywhere before. Friends dad had one, very comfy, huge and quiet. Good looking aswell, must be an age related thing, thought they were ugly bloaters when I was young biggrin

£5k for a classic car! XJ8 for a £1'000 then pick up a tidy Golf GTi mk3 for £1'000 followed by a Lotus Esprit or a Bentley for the remaining £3'000 if you look hard enough

There is no way on earth you're buying an Esprit for £3000.

You might find a very shabby resto project without an MoT for double that.

Indeed! 3K could get you a scruffy and likely to be above averagely problematic Excel, Eclat or (70s version) Elite, but only a mega basket case Esprit, RWD Elan, Eln Plus Two, or Europa. I am not sure about a ratty FWD Elan or ropy early Elise, as I have nary a clue what those sell for. Nooooo chance on even a crappy Seven or the most baskety of original Elites.

Excels drive very well, are quite practical, and by Lotus standards are reliable ish. Go for it!

There is indeed some bloatage, but the current Five wears its lard reasonably well. It is uber foogly to my eyes, but not as goppingly awful as most modern BMWs or most modern cars in general. The E34 is pleasantly slim, but longish. It handles in a very nimble way, despite being biggish by the standards of its time.
