Not a true classic, but alas. Perfect for me. Just need the money!

I disagree, I have never owned one, but driven many, its a classic alright, so far ahead of its time and never beaten.
A little beauty. I'd love one. But then I look at how much they cost and then consider other cars I could buy for similar money that I'd want.

I also thought we need a thread like this. Perhaps similar to the fleet for £100k, but what small nostalgic selection could you buy for your £5k total budget.
Damn, drat and blast - set my target price a bit too high - clicky
It's a 520i so all of about 100bhp but soon to have a 2.8 m52 conversion !

Just keep posting the retro cars so we can have a look.

A neighbour had one of these when I was young. Completely wrong of course, but what a practical body shape for a small car, and it's £700 and has done 88k miles: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vw-polo-mk2-breadvan-VER...

Blimey, I paid £50 for a Polo Bready last year, it's a 1982 model with 60k on it and was only a non runenr a core plug had popped out. Only found one rust hole the size of a 10 pence piece the rest is 100% solid making it the perfect base from my Frnakenstein motor!!!

You're right though they are incredibly practical. I once did a trip across Wales to collect an entire mk2 golf leather interior plus a pair of wings and it all went in the back of the bready, the only downside was having to sit far too close to the steering wheel for my liking but what the hell.

Having spent 2 min on ebay classics i do like all the old BMWs E28/34/21 etc Mercedes 300 CE 24v 190 cosworths, VWs etc but this stood out...

Opel Mantas - these remind me of my time spent at a local art studio where one of the music teachers had a white Manta that I thought was one of the coolest cars I'd seen.

We had an E reg one of those, the ultimate in utilitarian transport but was basically a big box on wheels, amazing what it could carry and as long as you werent in a hurry not that bad to drive, I got pulled by an irate copper in it, apparently I was doing 90 and still accelerating, er, it was 1050 CC, it was flat out at 80, 90 was but a distant dream.

Would the modern automotive market call that a "Shooting Brake"?

I remember some friends of my parents bought a new one of those, I was amazed by it - it had 5 gears! Yes I was young and easily impressed

The 80's is a serious temptation for me at the moment sub 5k. I'm keeping an eye out for a decent W123 280E as I reckon that prices will be heading northwards in the not too distant. Saab 900 T16's are also a regular search for me as well.

My most recent purchase is definitely retro. OK, so it was over the budget applied in the thread, but I'm hoping the like minds on here will appreciate her.....

I drove one for 2 years in the early 90s and never got faster than 99 downhill with a tailwind! I used to thrash it everywhere. It was a great wee motor.

Most of those died from rust rot, didn't they?
They did seem to outlast Novas of the time though.

Other factors may have accounted for one or two... Despite having only about 49 hp, it was a 1050cc version of the breadvan Polo which remains the only car on which I have ever had the brakes fade completely to nothing, on public roads. The time: about 1988 I think. The car: an undoubtedly fairly heavily abused courtesy shed belonging to GTI Engineering at Silverstone. The place: the multiple high speed roundabout entries associated with e full transit of Milton Keynes.

bow

That is superb, how far over budget though?! I've been tempted by a E21 for a while but feel the prices are going upwards an upwards.

RE: the polo brakes, standard ones really are terrible. 239mm solid disks with no servo assistance! I'm glad I've got some 256mm vented fronts with 226mm vented rear disks with a mk2 Golf GTI master cylinder to deal with the stopping!!
