If I had the money I would just buy it and not spend a penny on it, just drive around until it finally gives up then park it in the garden as a water feature or something.

Realistic rather than cheap I'd say. It is due a belts service and water pump change, and at that age it has either had a recent head gasket and general top-end overhaul not mentioned in the history, or is due one. The chain between the two camshafts, its tensioner, and the camshaft sprockets, also need inspection and regular replacement on the S2, as when that lot wear out you need to replace both camshafts, which is pricey.

I would want to see pictures of the inside of the sills before going a long way to view. The advert saying they've been rubbed down and repainted is all well and good if they had external stone chips where surface rust had started, but the sills very often rot from the inside out.

But look at it. Makes it seem all worth it cloud9

Worth it? Yes, I think so every time I drive my Turbo, but you need to understand what "it" is likely to amount to if you want the long term experience to match the looks.

Put it this way. I bought my Turbo for £8K, six years ago, a car that had a decent history, was structurally solid and superficially cosmetically very tidy, from a very reputable dealer. By the time the first three years were up I was somewhere in the mid £20s in terms of total spend. Only about £2k of that was stuff directly relating to it being a Turbo, which seems to be the factor that everyone gets paranoid about.

While an S2 has simpler plumbing, in other ways - the cam chain and sprocket stuff - the 16v S and S2 introduce all sorts of problems that just don't apply to the the 8v NA and Turbo cars.

There are certainly vastly faster and more track-developed Turbos out there than mine, and ones which have a lot more money in them. I know someone who spent more than £2OK just developing an engine for one. But judged as an all-round touring car for use on all roads in all weathers, mine is now probably one of the best 944s in the country in terms of overall structural and mechanical condition, and since completing the major overhaul and resto work it's barely cost me a penny outside routine maintenance, and it's also appreciated in value a fair bit. I'm coming up to maybe next year having the wheels done again and some of the stonechips and so on blown in at the front, but you get that with any car that's actually used.

But unless you are prepared and equipped to do a great deal of intrusive mechanical and bodywork yourself, some of it involving fairly specialised equipment and skill, you should not underestimate the financial pain involved getting one of these cars from the category where it's been maintained by shallow-pockets owners, up to once again being the weapon it was when it was new, or in some subtle but important ways better than new, with another decade of reasonably simple & trouble-free life ahead of it before some of it needs doing again.

Now that's a much better buy than that E23.
Undoubtedly! I just love the shape of the e23 and can't help admire a clean looking one!
As much as that looks nice, it does seem to be running hot! ETA reading again it says in the ad, my thought would have been viscous fan too.

I want this. If it were in the SE, I'd stick a bid in.

I have no idea how to post ebay photos, but it's a Volvo 960 estate on 100k miles, in great condition with aubergine paint and cream leather. Currently at £1k with no bids, 5 days to go.

If it was just a viscous fan coupling why not fix it before seling it?

Reads a bit like "Aircon just needs a regas".

Nice 960 It's a CD model top spec in 1997. The seller is right one of the best car's Volvo ever made. There is a V90 SE (rebadge 960) on eBay with a manual gearbox

The old man bought a 960 CD new on a N Plate in Silversand Metallic. He still maintains it was the best car he ever owned. I'll show him this....

I'm sure I've seen this up on E-bay previously (I regularly search for 90's Volvo estates 'just in case'). Makes me wonder why it hasn't been snapped up......

Possibly the paint?

It is amazingly coincidental that he has decided to move to Tuscany when it is 10 miles off 100,000...

Another Volvo a 1989 480 ES for £750 (or best offer) Might not be a classic yet but it's definitely retro and rare to find such an early one! seller say's it does need some TLC, but the body especially the rear wheel arches look really good.

Fond, probably very rose-tinted, memories of a 2.0 480ES from a lifetime ago.

Well appointed and very chuckable then, it is probably flimsy and gutless by todays standards but definitely still a way to stand out from the crowd and pop-up lights are always a winner.
