Definitely my idea, drivetrain makes it also worthy too, Netherland's finest creation smile
Hasnt aged too badly either given it's contemporary crud. Good spot.

True, but then again, try a 3.0 carbie Granada auto coupe, which was its equivalent. All of these things are relative.

The facelifted version, the 3.0e injection Monza was the contemporary of your XR4i and was a fair bit quicker than the 2.8 Royale, the 4-speed auto was betetr than the 3-speed, and I liked the updated 80s looks. A white five-speed manual Monza was a car I really, really wanted in the mid 80s but I could never afford one and they seem to be amost extinct now. One like this ould be a fun thing to waft around in even today. I did some marketing work at the turn of the 80s/90s for teh UK Irmscher importer and they had a 3.6 stroker engine conversion for them. Yum.

I see there's a manual one for sale here for £8.5K, which seems ambitious but if it means it goes to a good and caring home that's fine

Oh yes, for me that Monza is on a different level altogether. I think that's well worth the money - much quicker and more fun. Almost 20mph quicker top end and 2/3 the time to sprint to 60

I'd be happy with that as a daily runner/holiday cross Europe car
Yeah, I think these were more a Supra rival than a Granada one, they were pretty rare at the time, kind of like a grown up, six cylinder Manta with extra coolness, had to be the GS/E version with its black in stead of chrome thing, a really successful update of what was a nice, if a bit old and chintzy coupe based on a seventies saloon, back when 180 bhp was spoken of in reverential terms, nowadays it barely rates as a warm hatch.

My mum had a powder blue one of those when I was growing up. I called it "The Rustbucket". It wasn't, but I needed adequately to express my disdain for it. When the drivebelt snapped in a narrow street it made the loudest bang I have ever heard, before or since.

It was st.

I had one. Couple of years newer, lovely soft comfy thing, crazy gearbox which allowed reversing at motorway speeds, awesome heated seats (a real novelty at the time), would drift around on frosty mornings, but never uncontrollable.

I loved it!

More than a grand for that? Where's the rofl thingy?

Oh, here it is; rofl
I don't like them, but I can see it's worth more than a grand. To me it's probably twice the money it should be though!

Good spot on the Cherry too! I can't remember the last time I saw one

Not a chance, worst car I've ever been in. I'll mention it to my workmate who had one many years ago, he got it for free from a family member and he maintains that was because they either hated him or it was a big April fools joke. Cost him a fortune in constant repairs up until it emptied almost half its fluids at the same time, as he said it just puked it's insides out and died. I didn't know it was possible to have steering with that much play before anything happened.

Don't know if this will find any love here... it's over priced, leaky (driver's footwell), French white goods...

...and yet...

Good lord. Memories flooding back of hot vinyl seats and scalded legs in mum's 304 estates.
She had a Simca 1501 then a Rancho (yes, we were one of the few families that bought one) until dad's friend switched from being a Simca/Talbot dealer to a Peugeot/Talbot dealer and from then on we had a series of 304 and 504 estates.
I preferred the 504 as it had velour seats and a third row at the back so I could get away from my sister and be further away from mum, chain smoking in the front.

It's rare to find a nice one but a Mk1 MR2 is the better car in every way - and is probably a bit easier to find a solid one.

Must be my day today - my first sports car was an X1/9.

Rotten as a pear but I loved it, I was mid 20's in London with an Italian topless sports car. Felt like a film star in that car even when something stopped working/fell off/melted.

Written off by a drunken Irish taxi driver in Kilburn late one night, bought the wreck back off the insurance company to fund the first of many repairs to the replacement Integrale I bought.

Rust gets everywhere in these, mostly in inaccessible places so by the time you see it the worst has happened. Exercise extreme caution or plan to fund repairs in excess of the price you could sell for. I'm still tempted by another 25 years on though......

I understand your logical argument but I still love the x1/9. Because Bertone.

I had a silver FIAT and then a two tone silver/grey Bertone VS. Many happy times had in both.

It's like arguing with my wife... she says "Don't think you'll win by using reason, common sense and facts"

(They may not be her actual words)

Even as someone very familiar with (VW) scene tax, I am astonished at the difference between the prices of these and equivalent Mk3/4 Cavaliers, which IMO were the better car. There are currently two decent looking ones with long MOTs on Ebay for sub-£1K.

I'm sure you had a point, I'm just not sure what it is.
