They were 1 model down from the 1.6 GTI. 1.4 engine probably makes about 85bhp from memory. The 3 door was called the XS, the 5 door the GT.
Any good? Seems a good price considering how much GTI's are worth now.
Some people consider the XS to be a better car than the GTi, I seem to remember someone from one of the tuning firms back in the day, BBR or similar, saying some very positive things about it. If I remember correctly it was similar to the Rallye that we didn't get in the UK until the 106.

A bit expensive, a bit diesel, and dodgy plates. But retro and cool. http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-305-ESTATE-1905C-D...

I've just done a bit of homework on them, twin choke carb... sounds fun.

I always thought the 3 door looked much nicer that than 5 door.
I could only afford a 3 door junior, but it had a nice sliding sunroof ..

The XS was like the UK Rallye engine wise.....but it wasn't really like the proper 205 Rallye with the smaller engine, twin carbs and a lot more poke

That's the UK version of the Rallye, engine was like the XS and GT ....but not as hardcore as the continental 1.3 Rallye

All the 205s were pretty good to steer .....and the gawkier 309 cousins

I think Chris Harris bought a proper Rallye to go with his XS

As it is, the XS and the GT are the two that have always ticked all the boxes for me. Both are exceptionally direct.

That would be brilliant in gunmetal grey.

How much for a full respray ...?
Retropower XJC looks good in that colourway.

An older C is worth that sort of investment, a 4 door isn't really, nice as it is.
I'm not sure quarter bumpers on the back work. Besides not looking better it doesn't match the bumper on the front.

People who have no absolutely no idea what they're talking about. 50bhp down on a 1.9 GTI, roughly the same weight, massively inferior suspension and handling. The carbs are fun i'll admit that. But for pure driving experience; not even close to a good GTI.

For some people handling is a balance of power and grip

I've owned and driven XS and 1.6 and 1.9 GTI's

XS every day of the week and if I couldn't have one and had to have a GTi it would be a 1.6 not the 1.9

But I have no idea what I am talking about

Why do you prefer the 1.6? And why would you prefer a variation of a car which has less power, less grip and poorer handling?

Already answered see above

But if you want expanded answer - it's a lot more fun getting the absolute best out of less

Not picking apart, but you didn't answer. You just said which you prefer. Now having owned all of them and currently owning them and frankly, pretty much all I do is to do with 205 GTIs, i'm curious. I'd like to know; the reason the 1.6 is better than the 1.9? (knowing the absolute and all technical differences between them, and my cars being hybrids of the two). And why the cluck of all you would ever prefer an XS/RG to either GTI? The suspension setup alone on the GTI puts them a league above, let alone the major jump in BHP. It's just strange and i'd like to know the reason why.

What part of my reply did you not understand?

I'd prefer an XS over a GTi because they are more fun to wring the neck and enjoy the car

You understand that B'stard doesn't understand?

He can prefer whichever car suits him more. He only described why it appeals to him more

He didn't though? He gave no reason at all. He just said "I prefer X". I merely asked why as someone who knows the cars fairly well.
