I had a couple of the later (1988 ish) version of this, I think they had a facelift. The 1.0 4 speed was slow but the 1.3 CL with a 5 speed box was a superb little car, always felt quicker than it really was. As others have commented though the brakes really were terrifying.

I learnt to drive in an old X reg Polo, yes the brakes were terrible, I don't think that they were power assisted!
I think I recall it was something to do with the right hand drive conversion but I could be thinking of a different model.
The RHD Mk1 Golf GTI suffered from a rubbish LHD to RHD brake conversion, it was the worst thing about an otherwise excllent car.
I had a rose-jointed and braced crossbar fitted to my Mk1 GTI along with braided hoses and uprated discs and pads and the brakes were really good.

The trouble with the Polo was that it had no brake servo.

yes

Those early basic 106s have the same clean lines and utilitarian chic as the 205.

Could easily imagine that car on KGF classics with a substantial price markup.

Really nice looking car that 106! Saw that same ad about a month ago and it was up for £495 then if I recall!

That 106 is very close to home. Its less than what I am planning to spend on a pair of spare wheels for my mountain bike.

I also need an economical car to drive to work in. I fancy it as a little running fixer-upper....

Love that Pug 106!

Parts are so cheap and the engine should be fairly unburstable...

Check for rust and you could probably run that forever on buttons!

It's tempting...

I did - the MOT history did not look rosy on the corrosion front unfortunately.

What was 'better' out of the 106 and the Mk1 Clio.

A Clio identical age, engine size etc to the Pug has just come up for sale near me and I'm tempted. It's the usual story, 1 owner, super low mileage 40K etc etc. The only experience I have of these is my parents having one as a hire car when I was still in single digits.

Drive it, and see what you think? I felt the 106 was the better steer.

Yes, albeit some years later and not in that body style.

Only the later model in non estate version. My abiding memory of this version of the Polo was as a car deeply uninspiring to drive, but very useful, economical and almost impossible to kill.

I wonder if all the people saying how beautiful it is confused have ever driven one , horrible things , my wife had one when I met her in 92 , I drove it 220 miles to Heathrow airport for a 2 week holiday, I was genuinely hoping it'd been nicked when we got back so I wouldn't have to drive it home, it was PXd 3 days after screaming my way back up the M6 trying to kill it

The biggest joke is the price they were charging for them , broadly similar in 89 to what a Dacia sandero costs today and look at the equipment you get

What an absolute cracker cloud9

I'm sure you can get the seat sorted for a few hundred.

Seat covers are available to order from VW Heritage and any trimmer worth their salt will be able to fit them. Do it!
