This 6 series looks nice for £4500 or best offer. Might not look as good in the dry!

I assume it's not a huge stretch to convert these into a 635 instead of a 628?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/e24-628csi-not-635csi-m5...

Change the engine, gearbox, diff, diff mount and probably the prop shaft depending on which gearbox you choose.
Upgrade the shocks and springs, and struts depending on the age of the car, and beef up the anti-roll bars.
Re-wire the engine bay for the completely different engine management loom, including going through the firewall to the ECU.
As well as upgrading the discs, calipers and pads all round you would also need to re-plumb for the completely different braking system or go for a bespoke master cylinder and braking system.
Change the exhaust and you're mostly there except the niceties of the correct speedo, OBC, and possbly AC.
The hardest bit of all that has to be the engine loom; a new one will cost a bomb and an old one will snap, crackle and pop as soon as you try and move it.

I'll categorise that under huge stretch then.... Change the engine, gearbox, diff, diff mount and probably the prop shaft depending on which gearbox you choose.

If you want to do it completely, it's quite a lot more than just the engine. But it would be a pity to devalue the car at such expense. If for your purposes a 628 is too slow in modern traffic it would cost less in the long run to just buy a 635 in the first place. Pothole said:
Needs to be a 960 or better yet an S90...with the 3 litre 204BHP straight six
ETA: in fact this one which didn't sell at 5 bags when it was advertised by the importer and clearly didn't reach reserve at the auction either...wonder if they'd cut their losses and deal at £3500

That was originally owned by a member on the Volvo owners forum, he was asking £1,500 for it:

It's changed hands a couple of times and now with the dealer above.
Caused a bit of a stir on the forum by the looks! And that really was a steal at £1500 the dealer/enthusiast bought it for! Guess the market will decide if they now want to pay £4k or haggle down a bit. Don't suppose there as many as good floating about.http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=256...

Corrado VR6 Storm over budget £5850 (or best offer) but some haggling would get it closer to 5k

It looks like something your grandmother used to drive to church and then you look inside:

That strikes me as the French equivalent of a Mercedes 124 estate - design and engineering-led rather than cost-driven, and a quirky take on the need to have a long rectangle with wheels and an engine. I really like it actually. If you were handy avec les spanners - and were probably single, or at least don't much like your wife, this seems an even cooler alternative.

I had one like that as a company car for a while in 1983. A black one, though. Absolutely adored it, far more than the CVH-powered successor with the five speed box and rounded-off nose. Even though the eary car was a bit bouncy and harsh, more so than the later car which was generally more up to date and had better numbers. The early car was just such fun and looked terrific in its day.

That is gorgeous..But I wouldn't want to own it.
I think a vintage/old caravan becomes appealing because it's old (as dme says, being a bit st and old has a charm), because they're so awful that they become cool again, and because you could tow it behind the type of old sheds I like without either looking too incongruous. Am I convincing anyone?
