Bit of a project, but would be a nice car to save.

Just starting to climb out of the Council trough, I'd say, and looking particularly lovely here. Cheap, peppy and usable.

Not a usable classic for the moment though - sounds like it needs a nut and bolt strip down (and probably interior out) to get the chassis sorted.

Beautiful car though.

Sounds to me like you'd invest buskets of time taking it apart, only to find that the chassis is completely gone grumpy

Point of order Mr Chairman, but nowhere in the title or OP's first post does it say our cars must be use-able or in possession of an MOT, and in any case your final phrase trumps everything!

I do agree however that you'd have to really confident in your welder to take that car on.

Totally agree. If I had a double rather than single garage I'd be thinking long and hard about taking that on.

Low miles but tatty externally and basic spec. I think there will be better ones out there

I wonder what happened to the instruments - I have never seen them peel like this before.

It's odd but I've seen that on a few E36s now. A friend had one about seven or eight years ago that was the same and I've seen a few on eBay and other websites like that. I've no idea if other BMW models do it - I've only seen it on early (K-M reg or so) E36s.

Better low mileage ones out there with that kind of history aren't sub £1,500. Which is presumably why it's sold already.

Have we had this yet? Unloved by many but I think nicely aged and properly retro now, looks to have been cared for too and a genuine seller I think.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272586051387

That looks pretty tidy - they were pretty good to drive as well - like everything else in that class at that time, they took second place to the Tipo Sedicivalvole.
For a smidge under 5k a decent retro hot hatch
