The 635csi is a styling high point for BMW, though the heavy handed body kit does its best to disguise that!

I have always like the 164. I'd much rather have one of these than the Amazon, for example. The earlier cars look far better without the comedy girder bumpers and chrome headlight surrounds. I would swap them, but probably keep the originals for resale time. At £2,500 with 7b days to go, will it end up over thread budget though?

Lancia Trevi http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C371781

I love these. Unbelievably, the advert doesn't have a decent picture of the dash!

'Barnfind' Peugeot 505 GTi Estate looks a bit rough round the edges. Given the way these things rust, it could have a thoroughly wrinkled bottom too.

Don't let that snow stop you! Lada Niva 'Bigfoot' is remarkable, though I'm not sure that is the word which best describes it.

I like the E28 - my dad had one in the mid '80s, though in Comos blue and with 600cc less.

The advert says it is manual, but that looks like the switchable ZF automatic lever to me! The electronically controlled ZF4HP transmission in these enjoyed a lot of column inches when it was introduced in the E23, a couple of years earlier. It was regarded as very high tech.

Air conditioning was rare on the E28. I don't know why, but the system uses a big vent at the bottom of the dash which always seemed a bit amateurish to me. I don't suppose many will have the original TRX wheels now.

Quite common (if you look carefully) at 60s (and some later) cars for aircon to run through extra vents rather than being integrated into the standard ventilation system - even US stuff. I guess, if it's a rare option it makes it easier to add.

A friend's father had an automatic M535i when I was young - switching the gearbox to 'S' always seemed rather exciting!

I love that e28. The m535 is my favourite BMW I have been in (I've been in a fair few but not an e28 M5).

I've posted one of these before, but they offer quite an appealing option, especially for the retro/classic-beginner.

A more expensive (well out of budget) but prettier alternative might be one of these.

That car is the Switchable automatic.

The large 'vent' at the bottom of the centre console isn't actually a vent, its the air inlet grill to the air-con fan. E24's and E28's with factory air-con have two ventilation fans, one in the engine bay for introducing fresh air, and one for air-con sited in the centre console. When you switch the air-con on the fresh air fan stops and the air-con fan starts. If you RTFM you are also meant to slide all the vent levers to close (left) and then the air-con fan just re-circulates cabin air over the chiller pipes to provide cold air through the normal central vents.

'RTFM' seems a strong, even rude response to a casual question. Other than that, an informative reply.

My sincere apologies, rtfm wasn't directed at you in particular, more of a general observation of which I also am guilty of forgetting on occasion.
