I think it's probably only clear if you know what a banded wheel is.

To me they look tiny in diameter, the tyres look too small and the arch gap is MASSIVE.
Wheels are the right diameter, but far too wide now - and the tyres should be a much taller profile.

A 2.9 estate must be pretty rare! I'm guessing there were the 12 valve version but I'd imagine the 24 valve version would fit for over 200bhp.

I thought the 24V Cossie Colognes were expensive and complicated for their relative output?

The Cologne was done in 4 litre form for the Explorer and Mustang, may be a cheaper way of getting more torque or power.

I'm struggling to get my head around £5K for that and the price of the other Sierras below that. Fast Ford tax and classic/retro bubble?

I wouldn't say that's worth 3 times what Oa got that gold and brown W124 for. You pays your money....

I agree entirely.

I rather admire Ford cars, and my first ever brand new car was a Ford - an XR3i Cabrio no less, red natch, and with contrasting white socks - but I struggle with the love for the blue oval as an expensive classic.

I'd rather have the Ford .....unless the Merc was a 190 2.6 or 2.3-16/2.5-16
Happy memories of the old Cologne and 4x4s though - nostalgia is part of the appeal
More of a BM fan than a Merc lover

Chacun a son gout and all that though

Agree with the sentiment - it's nostalgia and supply and demand.

Just in terms of 1988 mercs, the 3.0 W124 is a vastly superior car to the 2.6 190 in my opinion - I own both - yet the 190 is worth 3-4 times that of the W124 saloon.

I have stuck up a reader ride thread if anyone is interested: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

For me personally, much of it comes down to the autoboxes - as soon as I see that I tend to lose interest in the car, nothing particular against Mercs per se. I'm not really into wafting along - I don't tend to do that sort of driving and don't drive through cities much

This on the other hand I find very appealing - not any faster than my old e36 328i but I really like it

Outside the budget, but certainly ticks the 'retro' part of the thread title.

500 quid cheaper on eBay, at least hehe

EDIT: I rather like this one though, which is identical in year, colour and spec to my Dad's old XR4x4...
