Personally I would buy a plain Jane E46 M3, save yourself 20k+ in the process & just enjoy it without worry of big bills, or maybe 996 C2S and just strip either of them out to the degree that it's easy to return them to standard for resale at a later date? Seems madness Smadhing 30k into a CSL for the marginal improvement over the standard M3 just to track it.

I'd find the best Porsche 968 I could and spend the rest on enjoying it.
I thought you were going to suggest a KIA of some variety winkbiggrin
Everyone should have one! Less money fixing the wife's car = more money to mod mine biggrin

So maybe a upgraded T350?

How about a 1M, or are they still a bit strong money wise?
Does anyone know what the 1M was doing price wise a year or so ago? Have they been slowly creeping down or have they remained static.
I do like the idea of having 4 seats (easier for the Mrs to approve), manual is a big thing for me too, as is limited numbers.
I've got a bit of a thing for M cars and seems a 996 GT3 is way out of reach......

How would a CSL compare on track to an Exige?
The Exige would trounce a csl on track in the right hands.

It might be more fun to spend a much smaller amount on something to drive around a track, then invest the rest of the money in something else.

I find fun is inversely proportional to financial risk. I am boring though, and have had a few incidents on track that would have been costly in something worth real money.

Anyway: Alfa SZ? E30 M3? (I'm sure I've seen some for silly money) Elan? 340R?
Alfa SZ? Left field suggestion there, I love it. If I had the money, that's where it would go. 10/10

4 pages and only 1 vote for R26.R?! That's where my money would go. You wouldn't lose a penny. Cheap to run compared to most suggestions and still new.

1M won't make budget, neither will CSL and I would be surprised if S1 Exige did either.

Which Exige and which track?

I'll pick s1 as it's been mentioned a few times, and the Ring.

7.50 for the CSL and 8.42 Exige ;-)

Not sure it's relevant whatsoever, try lots of cars and pick the one you'll enjoy the most on road and track.

Seems odd that the 1M is 25 seconds slower around the Nordschleife than the CSL, must of been a blistering lap.

Lotus 2-11. I was convinced I wanted a lightly modded Exige S, but a few test drives later I'd changed my mind completely and bought a 2-11. It's on another planet performance wise and I'd guess they won't depreciate much.

Maybe depends on driver and tyres?

They were pretty much the same from memory. As someone else pointed out they've never dropped significantly since their launch.

It would be my choice from the cars mentioned so far, the only snag being the forthcoming M2, but that is rumoured to have a turbo'd 4 cylinder engine, so it may not effect values of the 1M considerably.

Is the M2 due out soon?

Be surprising if it was a 4-cylinder - current M235i still being a 6-cylinder ( which was also much same lap time as the CSL round one track )

( in the hands of the test driver who got a ban for high speed in Scotland )

I think it depends what rumours you believe though - some sources say it will be a 370-400bhp turbo 6
