How long until you got your dream car or a great car?

39 years old when I got my VXR8, so a wait of 21 years from passing my test to dream car.
I'd say to the OP just go for it if there's any chance, life's to short. I used a huge amount of man maths to make mine workable with the missus.
I was determined to be in a VXR8 before I turned 40 years old. Used the mantra that even if I only run if for a year at least I’ve done it. Still got it 3.5 years later although it’s nearly broke me (or the other way round!) Just can’t get rid now and can’t imagine what I’ll ever change it for apart from another.

I've always dreams of owning a Ferrari, I guess it all started with Magnum and his 308 then heavily influenced by Miami Vice. I never had the poster on the wall though, the bedroom wall poster was a white Lamborghini - no chance I'm afraid with rising prices of owning one of those now.
Thankfully owning and driving my dream has actually been a pleasure, still puts a smile across my face every time I open the garage door - even more so recently as I just fitted a sports exhaust.

Been lucky enough to have a couple of dream cars over the years, but my first one started back as a boy in 1977 when I saw the film "The Spy who loved me". Ever since that I'd wanted a Lotus Esprit.
Finally in the late 90's I took the plunge and bought this. Kept it for about 12 years. Still brings a smile to my face when I see another one on the road.

Considering I do maybe 5-7k miles a year, I don't think fuel cost will bother me. I do the same on the bike at 27mpg.
I'm neither a hooligan on the brakes either but do love straigtliners!
I acquired a car I long lusted after at the age of 27 - an E39 M5. As I wrote in my profile about the previous car, a TT qS - "If the Audi was a foot in the door of performance motoring, this car represents kicking the door down with an Oxford brogue."
Still have to pinch myself occasionally, and remind myself I'm very fortunate to have it. Unfortunately my other ambition - being in a 911 before 30 - has run aground. Partly because of a recent change in circumstances, but also because for me it needs to be a 997.2 to be the 911 of my dreams, and that's not going to feasible in what time now remains. I could get a 996 but I'd regret it for various reasons. Plus there's always another car over the horizon...

Started driving at 17, in a 1.25 Fiesta, 6 years later at the ripe old age of 23 I've bought a new S3 which I'd lusted after for ages. I find it a great car.
In terms of dream cars, It's really left me confused, as I already get frustrated not being able to use the power without treading into license losing territory, would something with more power make me more annoyed? I don't really know anymore, or even what I want next for that matter.

Got this when I was 20, having wanted one since about 13. My realistic dream car and can't see me seling anytime soon.
There's other cars I'd prefer over it but they're for a lottery win.

Hmm, not an easy one. When I was 18 I got a Mk1 MR2 T-Bar which frankly I think is a great car.
When I was 21 I got my first TVR, an S1. Which wasn't too bad, but not my dream which was a Wedge. Which I got at 22. BUT then sadly I was attending meets and saw all too many Chimaeras, which became my dream car, so the Wedge went and I got my first Chimaera at 23. I still have one over 15 years later, so I guess I am happy with them.
I would also be happy with an F430 Spider, which is effectively now my dream car, but I will never get rid of the TVR. Have to say a DB7 Volante would be up there too..

Still waiting. Been obsessed with getting an Esprit for as long as I could remember. Just as I had a fair bit of cash in the bank and a steady well paid job I bought my first house.
Now I've got a big wedge of debt and a fair few more outgoings.
Looks like it will be 2016 before I'll be in a position to get one.

For me, I think I got my first great car when I was 17, as my first car was a Ford Capri and at 17, THAT is a great car...compared to what all my friends were driving.

Not quite my dream car, which would be something classic, but I bought my MKV GTI this year at 33, it being my second ever car. I've wanted one since they came out, the press raving about this new GTI being such a turnaround after the MK IV.
I passed my test at 24 and bought a 60hp Punto and have spent the rest of the time either in lowpaid work, at uni or latterly in central London so it was a bit of a promise fulfilled to myself and I had dreams of epic drives for the sake of it. Trouble is driving within the M25 I spend most of my time trundling everywhere with the odd squirt out of a roundabout. I sometimes wonder if I'd have more fun in a Prius eeking out max MPG.
Back in Scotland where I grew up I'd be having loads of fun understeering around country roads and revving the engine to death trying to keep up with better cars who probably didn't even know I was there.
