The FD2 weighs 1260kg with 220bhp, 0-60 in around 6 seconds, get it remapped with a race manifold and you will be laughing all the way to 8500 rpm, you will have to work it for its performance though... Won't see much in the way of depreciation and will easily do 30mpg...

Get the 335i. Such a good buy in that price range.

Wow thanks for so many replies.

CLS/C55 amg's - hmm its 367bhp but pretty heavy? A remapped 335/535 is 350-380 and lighter. Plus I imagine better on fuel, and probably cheaper to run. Maybe I should consider some TD's on these though.
Any CLS 55 is supercharged, not normally aspirated.

~476bhp goes some way to offset fuel costs...

I've got almost identical requirements OP but would settle for a little less speed I think. I'm also favouring a 330/335i estate. Cannot see past it.

That Passat CC is interesting though, what would the running costs be like in comparison to the BMW? The consumption isn't great but what about reliability, servicing etc?

Also, I've read in a few places that the 3.2 doesn't offer too much above the 2.0 4 cylinder engine because of the extra weight? Not sure how true that is?

Again I never knew that Passat existed in that form, 296bhp isn't too shabby and thats alot of car for the money, nice looking too.

Once again some great replies in this thread, I also didn't realise the CLS55 AMG was SC, I thought it was an NA lump! Interesting..... smile

Certainly got a few more cars to think about now.

It is also worth noting that power is quoted "conservatively" so as not to shade the SL55 which was the flagship at the time.

The CLS is a notoriously slippery shape and reading on the German forums it would seem that a standard car, derestricted, tops 200mph comfortably. For £13k it has to be one of the performance bargains of today. It does pretty much everything except light your hair on fire.

pre 56 B7 S4? pre 56 MK5 R32? Last gen S6? CLS 55 Is a cracking shout mind..as is the 'obvious' choice of a 335..but then it why wouldn't it be, its a complete package. Evo 8/9/10 if your into that sort of thing perhaps.

Passat R36? although they might fall into the 500 tax band.

Leave -£1500 for upgrades :-)
That would need a turbo or SC to get near 300bhp the OP wants.

Remember when these were first available as an import.
Road tests were very positive but noted ride was very hard for UK roads.

Would love one, my mate has one of these and its running 414bhp with a remap and is a lovely all rounder, but I'm pretty sure they are over £20k.

There's not much in it power to weight wise between this and the 335 believe it or not, both about 175 bhp per ton, the 335 will be far cheaper to get extra power from though... To be honest if it was my own money I would be buying a 335 at this price range nothing really beats it as an all round package whilst maintaining reasonable running costs...

Being an Audi, won't depreciate that much so although the initial outlay is higher, get it back the other end.

BMW residuals are pretty good too though smile

The audi is out of reach for now, especially as I'd want an auto, I don't want to over-stretch here, maybe thats one for the future. I guess the others deserve a look but 335i's are coming in v well priced now, have seen some amazing examples for £12k and good ones ub £10k.

yeah I saw them but looks huge/ugly, probably very very uninspiring to drive. Interior looked bland too.
