Thought it was about time I treated myself to a nice car. Having been a petrol head for as long as I can remember I've finally come to that point in my life where I can afford something a bit tasty !

I'm 33 and have a beautiful girlfriend and a 2 year old boy, so need to bear in mind I will need more than 2 seats. Live where I work so don't worry too much about petrol consumption. Running costs aren't the most important thing, although don't want them to be sky high.

I enjoy 'spirited' driving when I'm on my own and living in Cornwall am spoilt for choice with decent roads, but do drive to London every now and then with passengers, again not the most important thing.

What I've always wanted was an E39 M5 and think that's what I'm going to get, but thought it would be good to get some advise and thoughts from like minded people. My friends aren't exactly useful when it comes to cars!!!

Look forward to any response given.

Fantastic cars. The most versatile of my whole fleet and I don't think I will ever part with mine. Be careful though as all the ones that I saw close to £7k were a bit ropey. Rust is starting to become an issue on many of them now, but mechanically I haven't had a single problem.

Nice one guys thanks, taken the plunge and picking it up tomorrow biggrin

Also got it for £5k thumbup

Luckily this one seems to be void of any rust which is a result.

Its actually the one that was featured on wheeler dealers !!!

Will get some pics a soon as poss.

Thanks for the reassuring comments, makes me even happier to know I've made the right choice.

£2k off a £7k M5 would ring alarm bells for me...

As would the second bit tbh.

I'd swap the headlights, they weren't xenon ones as Edd fitted halogen units.

That car has done the rounds and has been for sale many times. Its not one I would've considered looking at, and £2k off the price seems odd to me. I paid more than that last summer for mine and mine is a '99 car.

I hope it is a good car for you though op. I'd take it to some like Phil at cpc in Amersham or Redish in Bristol which is closer to you for a look over.

Dd you get it from Epsom? I had a look at this car the other day... Was in good nick.

My mechanic has also looked over it and thought it was in good shape.

Had a few miles on it but was wearing them well! I thought it was overpriced to start with but at £5k, you've got a steal!

So far so good, had it inspected by an ex BMW technician and he gave it the all clear, except for the rear tyres ! Going to get it fully serviced when I get back to Cornwall by Oceans BMW Falmouth as I know the manager, he will look after me.

Yes it was the one from Epsom as it goes. As it had been on the show I rang a friend of mine who worked on the Wheeler Dealers programme. He told me before its a bit of a con as they buy the cars, check everything out and replace everything that needs replacing. As it is broadcast they can't afford for things to go wrong so they cheat a bit and just show the cheaper parts getting replaced so that they can make a 'profit'. So the car had a new gearbox put in, all the suspension replaced, the alternator was actually a new one, not just the old one with new bearings. There was a lot more too so I'm quiet pleased with it.

Will keep you posted on my progress with anything interesting.

Thanks again for all comments and please keep them coming.

Ps, just got the mufflers deleted biggrin

Glad you're happy with it. Any receipts for all of the replaced parts?

Yeah I've got receipts for the brakes, suspension, gearbox, but not the alternator. When my friend checked it he said it looked like it had been replaced not too long ago so not to worried about it.

Generally really happy so far smile

Use the likes of eurocarparts, carparts4less, allgermanparts and bmminiparts for most of the hardware. You can save an absolute packet and still get OEM stuff as long as you know what you're buying.

Golfdsg your right, but she was sat next to me while I was typing so thought I would get some brownie points! Now she is not here I can call her 'the all knowing thorn of thorns in the side'! Lets hope she doesn't ever see this!!!! lol

It is just standard suspension from what I can tell. Autocarparts are an excellent place to buy from and I use them all the time.

Just returned from a nice drive to cornwall, managed to get her up to #~=mph, 10mph short of her limited top speed, was messing with a guy in a merc c320. Then after a long brisk drive back I nearly get taken out by some stupid chav wker in Watford !!!! Oh well made it in one piece smile

Thanks again for everyones responses and advice
