This is on my list to buy for my second car, a Ford Fiesta Zetec S 1.6 Petrol, but I just read over and over about the fact that it does not have a 6th gear and the revs at 70 MPH is almost 4000 which is what I have on my 1.2 currently..

Surely this will have poor fuel efficiency, are there any cars that can compare to the price, the looks, and the power of the Zetec S? Obviously a car with a 6th gear, if you do know a car, please make sure it is a petrol, not anything over the top due to my insurance as I will be 18..

Quotes on a zetec a come to £1300 and it's only 99BHP

That sounds awfully low, it would equate to 105mph at 6000rpm. Even my old Sierra does 3000rpm at 80 in 5th.

The revs aren't the problem, the pre-historic nature of that particular 1.6 is what kills the economy in the old Zetec S.

Check out a Fiat Panda 100HP. Looks better than the Fiesta, drives better, same power but lighter, and it's got a 6sp gearbox.

Mini Cooper D?

1.6 Turbo Diesel, 6 speed. 60mph is about 2k revs. 110 bhp - similar to the Zetec S? Free to tax. 65.4mpg of my last tank.

£2500 is my budget, and also not to keen on the looks of the fiat panda!

Are you sure it's 4k at 70mph? That seems excessively high, i've driven a few 1.2 and even they did 3.5k at 70mph.

Number of gears doesn't really matter - often the ratios are just closer together. You'd be better off looking at the final drive etc. Remember small petrol engines generally produce power higher up in the rev band - the engine sits at high RPM so you can make it up a hill without having to change down.

Fiesta looks good, only thing is they're noisy on the motorway obviously with the 3800 rpm at 70

Chap. I know you're 17 and ham-strung by insurance, but there's no need to create so many threads about cars you want. Previous Cat C/Ds, derv hatchbacks, buying a 1.6 petrol, and/or buying a Fiesta - why not take the time to narrow your cars down yourself before coming to PH instead of asking multiple times and changing your mind? All it does is irritate people when their helpful advice in your previous topics looks like it's been ignored.

I'm not having a go at you, but only you know what car(s) you like. A bunch of posts on a forum won't change your mind, nor should we hand-hold you through the car decision process either. Go and explore while you can, at your age pretty much all your income is disposable so there's no need to worry yet.

Madness?.....not really...generally saabs are driven by older, well off males...which means they avoid the "young drivermobile" price hike.
I know of someone whose insurance on a 2.0 litre turbo repmobile was about 2/3rds the price of his 1.2 corsa...insurance answer...corsas are frequently written off in crashes.....

plus bigger car..more toys, makes you look sophisticated and a "man of the world" to the females of the species ;-)
I only need a little car mate, and can do with some average mpg on a petrol rather than a diesel because the costs of a diesel are too high to maintain at my age

I don't believe 4k at 70 for a second. I've driven a mk5 ZS at 70 and that was about 2800-3000 RPM. My current 1.25 is 3200RPM at 70.

Heh, teenagers. They ask for advice, and then proceed to ignore it until they get the answer they want.

The Zetec S does high revs on the motorway, but it's still a small engine light(ish) hatchback -it won't be that bad on fuel. Just go for it if you want (or a Puma 1.7 wink)

Pray tell, what costs? An older diesel won't be privvy to DPF faults or other expensive stuff over and above an equivalent petrol.

My quick working out says that if you do 10k a year in a petrol that does 35mpg vs a diesel that does 55mpg, you're saving 20p a gallon by buying petrol fuel. However because of the efficiency, you're saving over £500 by buying the diesel.

This is beginning to sound like you've made up your mind and are just being dense by discrediting points made by PHers.
