The E-class coupe and cabrio are simply a C-class in drag. The mechanically they are the same as the W204, that's why they are built on the same production line. They even used the C-class centre console in it, just that they slapped a different dash and body on it.

Despite what the badge says, buy this and you've really bought a C-class. If you want an E-class coupe, then you need to be looking at the CLS.

Lovely, subtle mile muncher.

I've only ever seen one. It burbled past the other day as I was cycling home. It was the absence of the usual diesel racket that made me look up and clock the badge.

This is perfect for those of us who drive across Europe once or twice a year. And there'd be more room in the back for some wine-buying at source than my XK can manage. On the other hand the cornering will be Mercedes-bland.

Mind you, everything has it's price and at sub £20K it gets interesting...

They feel like it to drive as well. Very disappointed in the E-Class cabrio or an E500 would have been hard to say no to :-(

Ok - a story of shame.
I bought a nearly-new one of these except it was the E500 Cabrio with all the AMG bits. Tastefully it had been de-badged by the dealer principle who specced it as his own demo car.

I saw it. Loved it the way it looked and bought it, but much to my shame, I asked the dealer to stick the E500 badge BACK ON!

It was actually a really nice drive with the roof down on a summer day...

You could spend half that and have a real AMG 4 seater modern coupe that in my view is better looking, it's probably also a lot rarer and slightly faster.

The Clk55 AMG

Lovely looking car and very appealing for the performance. However I'd fear it's just reached the age where annoying niggles could begin along with the potential for big bills. Still a nice buy though

All of this, and also the terrible early 00s fisher price Mercedes interior. Running that AMG is likely to end up being a labour of love, that E500 is probably a better bet for your primary or only car covering real mileage.

Having owned a c class coupe followed by an e coupe I have to say although basicly the same car the e coupe is a lot nicer in real life even the looks are better up close than photos suggest) although mine is a face lift, less keen on pre face lift lights. The front seats are much better the frameless windows look great and it passes your seat belt (hard to reach due long doors). Although a bit narrower than a regular e class it seems to ride and drive about the same to me. (Also similar to c class).

Classic big displacement AMG fulfilment with a bomb proof engine and chassis. Granted its not the most lithe of things but it’s bloody enjoyable nonetheless. I enjoyed learning the 'ropes'!

Your post has bought back fine memories and makes me laugh more at the electric cars of our era.

The E being discussed in the thread having the more modern 5.4(ish) that developed significantly more power than the earlier AMG 55 motor is a step forward, and wrapped in a more up-to-date but typically Mercedes body too, but I do love the A209.

The E is a great car but it always pained me why there was never a 63 version - the 'C' never quite hit the spot for me.

What other modern-ish V8 4 seat coupes? Monaro....!!!
badge snobbery wont allow such talk unfortunately ... I personally love the Monaro and its gorgeous notes but people seem to see it as a glorified Insignia for some odd reason
Apologies, slipped my mind! Definitely worthy of PH consideration, not sure a casual buyer looking at a E-Class coupe would consider one. Stand to be corrected...

I think this is a lovely looking car. Classy and without the seemingly essential aggression on a lot of other cars. I think AMG missed a trick with this car and have admitted such. Imagine this with the 6.2 V8 in it and a subtle body kit. A proper fast cruiser.
That's CLK is a fine car. I looked at one myself a few years back. Good value more.
And, no matter what Mercedes, Audi and BMW call them, a four door car is a saloon, not a coupe!

I have an E350, I love the seatbelt being passed to me as soon as I shut the door. An E500 will be an absolute mile muncher, my car has handled London to Gothenburg and back faultlessly, my old Leon Cupra R left me drained from just London to Glasgow!

I bought an E500 convertible of the same style as the article (2010) and the best thing about it was the engine and the exhaust note, I have had 2 AMG`s and this E500 sounded better than either of them at normal speeds, a lovely burble.
Sadly that was the only good thing about it, its tiny inside, the wheels look lost in the arches at 18" with no larger option at the time and the interior was "low rent" Sold within a year.

I basically like these, but what the hell happened with that rear quarter-light? What was the point of that? It just totally spoils the lines of the thing. Surely they could have found a way to get the rear window to open without it - I mean, they did for the cabrio.
It is there because of where they located the fuel tank and filler hose, you would have thought they could have corrected it at the design stage.
