The article said:

To maintain the legend started by the Escort Cossie, I think the new car would be £50k, 4WD, 370hp Turbo engine and weigh around 1400KG.

All of which are perfectly achievable.

I remember as a kid sitting in an escort cossie in the Ford bristol street showroom back in 1992. It had a sticker price of £24k.

I'm guessing there are no changes for a Mondeo ST and affordable performance saloons / estates are dead.

Ps. I know there is a Focus ST estate. Unfortunately, size-wise it's not brilliant.

Lol the last focus was 40k with a borrowed engine and fwd and wasnt the best of its type
Good luck getting all the rest for an extra 10k

Front wheel drive, diff and heavier than the previous model, so more power to compensate (350bhp). Then a limited edition with 400bhp released towards the end of its shelf life.

I don't think Ford will risk anything two radical as it seems to work for them as it is. Quite heavy, big power going through the front wheels and a few fake vents.

I'm wondering the same thing myself. I suppose it's what the market is asking for.

None of the dodgy, leaden chav styling of the second one. Plenty of power and great handling would top it off.

Be a st effort this time round mark my words....

No way would they forgo the 2.3L 4 banger they have; fits the bill perfectly so thats the engine they will use. As trends go itll have about 320hp. FWD no doubt as RWD wouldnt suit the cars character and AWD will be too expensive; Ford wont aim for VW Golf R pricing especially after seeing where they pitched the MK3 ST. and I wouldnt be suprised if they forgo a mechanical diff to cut corners too.

The ST's 2L 4 pot is oldschool IMO and should have been discontinued years ago so they wont use that. However its a nice motor for a poor person (like me) and its bags of fun even if the handling characteristics are bizarre for a hatch. I rekon the RS will suffer from annoying torque steer and tram lining like the ST does but be a lot of fun and do exactly what the ST did when compared to its rivals.

Am I alone in thinking if I were to consider a new 2L turbo Ford of some kind the Mustang evoques more intrigue than another FWD hatch back?

I'm sure it'll sell faster than they can build them but that's not always the measure of a car these days it seems, more the marketing.

+1 a bit lighter would be nice but I wish they would do it with three doors, we can live in hope.

So this is the image that's been popping up a lot lately.
As long as there's a 3 door option, with imperial blue, then i'm in!

They don't make a 3 door Focus. I can't imagine they're about to build one specially for the RS.

Would it be that hard to use a 5 door shell with new rear skins.....it is big arches on shells that made the escort Cossie cool

I can't believe it would be that much. For £100k I will take a week off work and weld on some mild steel to a 5 door and buy some tiger seal and filler!

Yep would be amazing, but isn't it the yanks that are developing it ? Does Ken Block have that much sway ?
