RE: New Focus RS confirmed

Another Focus to cheapen the RS name even further.
I think you're just being nostalgic about the Sierra/Escort Cosworth era. Ford have already produced the Fiesta RS Turbo/RS1800 and the Escort RS1600/RS2000. None were fast turbo AWD cars just average hot hatches. I think the 'RS' brand still has appeal to enthusiasts, and the Focus RS Mk2 got good reviews. Also what's a better known alternative to 'RS'?
I think it will be FWD. They could go after the 45 AMG and Audi RS3 but the AWD would add so much cost, weight, development costs, etc. Also I don't think the RS would really be able to beat those cars in tests, just be a bit different, and it's a smaller niche market.
I think the next Focus RS will be like a Leon Cupra 280 but with a bit more power, a bit less understeer, a slightly wilder body kit and for slightly more money.

I am the only one thinking this is getting silly now. 350bhp in a road car/hot hatch? Whats the point? you can't use it really on the road, and if you do you'll be in license loosing terratory almost immediately. The current RS is just too heavy and over powered to be fun - IMO. Why do the main stream manufacturers keep playing the numbers game instead of making a truely fun to drive car.
I'd rather have something light, RWD, with 200bhp, with decent torque. (maybe I'm getting too old!)
+1 Extreme hatches may be great for the track but can they really justify their huge price premium over say a Fiesta ST as a road car and when considering fun/£? Not in my opinion. Having said that I'm glad it exists even if I'm not in the market for a car of this type.I'd rather have something light, RWD, with 200bhp, with decent torque. (maybe I'm getting too old!)

It has to be fwd, because it's an RS Focus. 4WD would just be boring, because you deprive yourself of slippy diff joy. It had more than 300bhp last time, it'll have at least that this time. I'd say 330bhp with a 400bhp run out model. Competence is boring, make it fun, and make it ride properly. Don't make it £30k with rock hard springs and shocks, make it £35k with really fantastic suspension - something to make it a little more exotic than that bloody dull Seat that pretends to be fast - ken thae shocks with them little reservoirs that hang off the side, eh?!
Sorry, come over all fast ford.
I agree that if you give it massive grip and really firm suspension it will probably feel better on a dry track but will slide faster with less warning and be a bit scary or uncomfortable on a wet and/or bumpy road. I agree that AWD will give it a bit less driver involvement and add weight/cost. I think £35K is a bit expensive when you've got the M135i/M235i and Golf R/Audi S3 for similar money but I guess it's the FWD equivalent of those cars.Sorry, come over all fast ford.

Its worth mentioning that the Focus RS models are usually cheap compared to their German counterparts.
The Mk2 RS came out in 2009 with 305bhp and it was £25,000 brand new, an absolute bargain really! Whilst comparing it to the A45 AMG, RS3 Sportback you must take into consideration how much cheaper it is.

This is why I said upthread about it being a hard car for Ford to decide a price on.The Mk2 RS came out in 2009 with 305bhp and it was £25,000 brand new, an absolute bargain really! Whilst comparing it to the A45 AMG, RS3 Sportback you must take into consideration how much cheaper it is.
With the ST knocking on 25k and a Golf R at 30k, it doesn't leave them tonnes of wiggle room.
I'm more concerned about it feeling boring...
The Mk2 RS was dripping with character, even the Mk1 RS felt special.
More relevant to the Mk2, but the ST was a great base to build on... I'm not sure has the Mk3 is as good a base...
The hatches are becoming a little samey now... Everything is 2.0 Turbo... Someone find a way of doing something different .

Lol I got the price wrong get over yourself ! Im fully aware it's a volvo engine thanks and what a great engine it is, I didn't say the Rs was rubbish did I ? I simply said it wasn't the best in class, if it had of been I would of bought one
Instead of my Rs 250, which model out of the lot did you get ?
Would be great if they could tie in with Cosworth again - 4wd Focus RS Cosworth - 400bhp 2.5 Eco something or other. Special edition RS500 towards the end (with 500 actual BHP to match) and a matt black paint option.
Sadly this won't happen. So it will be a FWD with a trick diff (like the 911 engine in the back 'mistake') it will have a 2.5 and be around 370bhp. price will be £30k base but it will have quite a lot of equipment as standard. They will drop orange but keep green and blue along with the standard black, white and silver.
All speculation of course. and with nothing to base it on other than my opinion.
Internet pint says I'm right.

I have heard through contacts within Ford that the next RS will have in excess of 400BHP, will be 4WD and they are targeting a time around the nurburgring of the Nissan GTR. Not slow then
They were going for 400bhp from the 2.3, although it was confirmed it would only be FWD. One of the Ford Engineers attending this meeting mentioned it after over coffee, all of us laughed at 400bhp through the front wheels, but apparently they weren't far off achieving it then. This was back in June, so I'm guessing things may have changed with the development since then.
Although further to this, when a family member bought a EcoBoost focus in October they mentioned there would be a Fiesta RS..

AWD isn't the be all and end all, drive a Golf GTI PP and an R and you will see that the FWD golf is the better handling and much more fun car to drive. And even in the Leon Cupra 280 (50bhp more than the GTI), the FWD still handles the power and is a better car than the 4WD R.
My point being that although 4WD will give it that better off the line traction, a trick FWD set up can result in a more rewarding to drive. I feel that 4WD is the hype at the moment becuase of the low 0-60 times that are produced, which can be great, the launch control on the Golf R is brilliant, but I feel that what matters to most anyway is a a headline bhp figure or 0-60 time for bragging rights and a German badge on the bonnet.
Hoever, I think a Focus RS will sell regardless of spec and will have very strong residuals due to the fan base.
Nah, it's not just the launch off the line, it's the in-gear behaviour at legal speed that I find frustrating in a heavy turbo fwd family car. Just my opinion hence immaterial, though. My point being that although 4WD will give it that better off the line traction, a trick FWD set up can result in a more rewarding to drive. It will be 350bhp, 4x4 and circa £30k
1. After complaints from people who went elsewhere due to mk2 frs being fwd, they will make it 4x4
2. The fact the Mustang Ecoboost is £30k and rwd, it would steal fwd mk3 frs sales. Ok less power. But that is what Mountune is for!! So thats why it will be 4x4.
3. If it is £35k everyone would just buy a rwd Mustang GT (V8) at the same price.
4. The FRS cant be in same price range as the Mustang GT.
5. It will fall between the £30k Mustang Ecoboost and the £35k Mustang GT. So £30k sounds like a nice round figure.
6. It will be 350bhp, as the mk2 frs was 300bhp and rs500 was 350bhp. Having any less, would have it lacking vs the Golf R, Audi RS3 and Merc A45 AMG.
