My daily and only car is a 22 year old Golf with almost 230,000km (so around 142,000 miles) on it.
So basic (only 'toy' is power steering, no central locking, no electric windows, not even a rev counter) cheap to run/tax/insure, easy to work on, parts are plentiful and cheap.
I've never owned a car newer than 1998 and have been driving since 1999 :-/
