Yes yes yes! Same here. As a child on holiday in France I'd always find some interest in the Moncao and Baccara models, they were obviously even to my [then] young eyes something more special than the usual versions.
Practical Classics did an article recently about the Baccara models. Even the Baccara Clio was very well specced with plenty of toys and full leather.
Haha it's nice to know I'm not alone... I spent many a childhood holiday in France getting excited spotting Renault 25 V6 Baccaras in supermarket carparks. Happy days.Practical Classics did an article recently about the Baccara models. Even the Baccara Clio was very well specced with plenty of toys and full leather.
Great car and article - SOTW very much on form this week.
We had a 1.7 GTX for a while, was a fairly quick little car for its day, the gearbox failed though, got that fixed and flogged it and the amount of knobheads it attracted was insurance as at the the time it represented an insurance anomaly, i.e. wasnt too bad to insure and was reasonably quick.
One guy came down with his mate who knew about cars, they tunred up in a pristine MR2 in blue, they test drove the Renault and the guy drove like an idiot, was doing seventy in a thirty until I told him to slow down, fancied himself as a rally driver I think, we got back (shaking) and I expressed interest in his MR2, he tossed me the keys, I thought to have a go but he actually just meant to have a nosey round it, sit in it etc, but I took my chance and nipped off in it and gave it the hammering of its life, got back and he looked like a Meerkat with ADHD, they didnt buy the Renault !
In some ways the 1.7 was a nicer driver than the turbo, it rode better and it wasnt as frantic, it was quick enough with a more predictable power delivery, turbo was very addictive and great fun if you were in the mood.

I think I find this more appealing:

Similar money, long MoT.

My gran had a Mk1 5 followed by a mk2 5 1.4 auto - I loved it on the odd occasion I drove it.
My first car was a Renault 11 1.7 TXE, same engine as this one along with sharing the interesting reliability issues. I bought my 11 for the same reason as some one above mentioned - it was relatively cheap to insure for the performance - I would have had a 1.7 5, but I couldn't find one I could afford at the time.

The thing I remember most about these and streon AX's for that matter is how thin the body panels were.
If someone lent on it you'd have a nice dent in it.
Fortunately if you took the door panel off, 9 times out of 10 you could just push it out with your hand.
I can see the love for 80's hot hatches but sadly not this. As it's not, well, hot.
It's the equivalent of hitting the post in football. Close, but a miss at the end of the day.

My gran had a Red one when I was a child. One of my childhood car related memories is being in the car with her when she won back to back traffic light GP against some fat gimp in a cavalier. He was not best pleased. Surprisingly nippy but ran out of puff quite quickly being the 1.4.
This one has no appeal to me at all. Horrible colour, interior looks naff and the 1.7 engine is neither here nor there. Spend extra and buy the turbo or don't bother IMO.

HA! i had one of these when I was 18 and loved it! Really nippy and flimsy thing. Used to fly along. The 1.7 revv'd so nicely too. I stuck some turbo wheels on it and slammed it to the grounf. Great car to have as a teenager!
The one feature I loved about it was the baguette holder in the parcel shelf
Good times !!
