OK, I've been waiting, and nobody else has said it, so "you wouldn't want to crash in one of those..."

Of course having owned a contemporary AX 1.4, and still riding a bike, I'm clearly dead and my opinion doesn't count...
I got rid of mine (hateful thing) after both A-pillars rusted through from the inside. Structural integrity? hmmm

A barried wannabe-Williams is more appealing than an OE spec classic? OK.
A colleague's wife had an RSi Clio and said it was pretty rapid. I thought the big engine, small car makes for rapid progress would also apply.

I looked at and test drove an R20 2.2 TX once. The owner had replaced it with a 25.

I'm not doubting that, but the linked one isn't exactly a prime example, is it?

First car was a R5. Only the TC model mind with it's sub 1 litre engine and push button radio. (could only dream of a cassette player frown ).

Used to look enviously at those who had a Monaco. One day V, one day...

My mum had one and it was great, been looking for one for a few years. They are incredibly hard to find at all, let alone close to that condition.

So it's got the wrong wheels on and a buggered steering wheel it's easily one of the best I've seen. If I were in the position to get it I would.

I remember blasting 5 Turbo which had been made to produce much more power than it left the factory with around some country lanes years ago , it was tremendous fun. then the gentlemen that owned it (my brother)lifted the carpet to reveal that it was two welded together "CU NEXT TUESDAY" :-)

Always had a soft spot for these. I loved the idea of that big engine and all that luxury in a small car. As has been said, it wasn't uncommon to turbo this lump either a la Volvo.

I may have an abnormal attraction to this sort of thing though, what with my first car many moons ago being a 205 Roland Garros.

I proclaimed 'oh no' out loud as I opened the ad. It's in Somerset. Must resist!

How wonderful to see so much love in a SOTW thread, or indeed any thread on PH thumbup

There's a rather large French classifieds website - www.leboncoin.fr - there are plenty of Baccara Renaults on there from Clio to 25: http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/offres/champagne_...

(the URL shows the Champagne-Ardennes region but I have selected the whole of France)

They are reasonably priced, I think (perhaps I've been out of the UK too long) so those of you with a penchant (that's French, avoir du pois Rodney) for this stuff might fancy a road trip to pick one of these things up...

I'd absolutely love to own that, these are great cars, I wonder if he fancies a swap with a Merc 190E? Also I'm sure that steering wheel is original.

Another winner.

I used to love small cars, luxury cars and French cars.

All found in one great package.

I am biased because this model was my second car. My first car was a 2CV and I thought that I had made it when I bought the Renault.

Is the luxury version of the Citroen DS3 the modern equivalent?

I do not look at French cars any more. I have been brainwashed by the Germans.............

Wow, lovely!

When was the last time you saw a R5 on the roads?

I opened this expecting the thread to be full of " French crap blah blah blah " But have been pleasantly surprised.... I have 4 french hot hatches, and would not buy that particular car myself, but a great shed, oh yes!

Look at that leather! I remember back in my school days a friend's parents had a Renault 25 Monaco. I thought it was amazing, the height of luxury!

If they ever sell it over here, this will be http://www.renault.fr/gamme-renault/vehicules-init...

I had a 2008 Clio Initiale and the interior fit and finish was fantastic, particularly the quality of the leather. I'd love to see a new Initiale with the 1.6 turbo from the Renault Sport version - I think the dual clutch gearbox would make sense in such a car.

Love it. A cheap, reliable, frugal little workhorse that has real character for less than a packet of chips !
I own one... but only the 1.4l auto version, and gunmetal grey not brown, but still the beige leather interior, power steering and brakes, central locking, power windows... and a manual choke just to remind me that I'm not in a shrunken Mk 1 Espace! (Same dash switches). Mine's called Grace, of course. What else would you call a Monaco?

Cost me £500 to buy, about that each year in maintenance/running repairs, lovely little car. Very comfortable ride, enough poke when needed, good smooth-changing gearbox. I believe there's only 42 left on the roads.

This one - lovely condition and a 1.7l engine? Could be a LOT of fun!

I had a 1.7GTX good engine but very questionable handling. Had very interesting episode when having to brake mid corner on a wet road due to a cattle on the road, resulting in a complete sideways moment, saved but more luck than judgement.
