Volvo P1800 would be a good candidate for some modern/sporty additions

Needs to be an iconic car, fairly mass produced but now getting rare on the roads in the UK, and ideally still plentiful in dry climates for the supply of donor cars.

XJS Jag is the only practical car I can think of, and aiming for the TWR look but all modern under the skin.

Corrado VR6 with VAG-derived 4WD running gear (maybe R32 or S3) and a modern iteration of the VR6 engine (again, probably from the R32) plus turbo-charging, and decent suspension and brakes, and an updated interior, would probably do it for me.

I reached the point with my Corrado that I either had to throw a metric arseload of money at it and do that, or else sell it. But after 14 years of ownership and having just spent a metric arsecheek (which is less than a metric arseload but still quite a lot) on an engine rebuild on the Sagaris, I decided I should sell it.

Even now I wonder if I made the right decision. I think I did because the tin worm was just starting to nibble on it, and it would have needed an awful lot of money spent on it (and had already had an awful lot of money spent on it too) and I figured that after 14 years I'd had my fun out of it. smile

THIS!!!!!!

You can't count the hours I spent thinkink about building my perfect Volvo 1800 S.

This one is mine:

It has the engine made, the suspension, the interior, etc.. I just couldn't stop fiddling around with it.
It took my 10 (ten!) years to realise I should stop right there and enjoy the car as it is today. (I still have to put the seats back in.... and the interior.... I have to do this for the past two years!!!!)

I would so love to take every last nut and bolt apart and then take the very best parts money can buy an reengineer the thing to make the very best car ever made!!!

I'd rule out the W124 on the basis of the 500E and E60 having already been done. Whatever is done to one, it's never going to handle like an Elise.
Agreeing that there need to be plenty of them, the R107 seems a good candidate. Pop in a C32 engine...

Done... Close thread.

I have always envisaged the "Singer" treatment given to the 80's Turbo Esprit. Its a fabulous design which stands out from the crowd, breath-taking design with some lovely little details that could be nicely enhanced. The interiors lend themselves well to the runched leather and an uplift in quality would bring it on leaps. The chassis is great and can handle plenty more power with the required bracing. You could keep the original engine, rebuild it to push around 300bhp or wip it out and put a vast aray of engines in there. ive seen Audi, alfa, BMW plants in there.

It makes perfect sense... they are sooo cheap (for what they are) they are well regarded and people have a huge amount of fondness for them, fiberglass to so easy to work on.

If I had the money I sorely would....

Really
^^This.

I had an '85 Turbo Esprit and loved it.

Singer does 'icons' and there are very few cars that live up to that as much as the 911, IMHO, as the classic Esprit, E-type, and maybe the old Escorts.

Any TVR in 15 years time.

Updated suspension, rebuilt chassis, brakes, properly engineered HVAC, engine/trans/hybrid combo du jour, or maybe even a Tesla (or whatever) powertrain transplant to keep them emissions legal and avoiding the inevitable ludicrous tax that will be levied on fossil fueled vehicles in the future.

Probably a bit too extreme compared to Singer but I love this thing. Not much left of the original 190 and with 600 modern Merc horses.

TVRs and Land Rovers are a good shout. - I've not seen my Discovery for a couple of months as a specialist friend of mine is busy giving it some TLC.

Oh $deity yes. LOVE those things so bad. But what would you do with it? Apart from the engine it is pretty much perfect, isn't it? Perhaps an all aluminium V6 tuned for low down grunt, coupled to some kind of modernish semi-auto gearbox (absolutely must remain controllable via the dainty shifter mounted on top of the steering column)... but what else could be done? All carbon fibre bodywork perhaps?

KWE do a great job of updating them, but its improvements rather than replacing.

Some silly ones people came up with in the pub earlier :-

Instead of an MR2 with 355 body kit, build a 355 with MR2 body kit....
A Boxster with Subaru WRX engine to ensure reliability.....
240z with GTR power & running gear....
Daimler SP250 with Majestic Major power & running gear....
928 with Ferrari California power & running gear....
Austin Allegro Estate with Honda VTEC & s/charger power & 4wd running gear....
Triumph TR6 with BMW 6cyl power & running gear....
Alvis 3 litre with BMW V10 power & running gear....

etc...
