Congratulations Derin. I always thought the 525 was such a nicely balanced car in terms of a smooth classic BMW straight 6, quite enough speed, and reasonable fuel economy.

I fancy a bit more power. I take it this would be a terrible idea (many shades of silver). http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

£2.5k...

W124 experts, my steering makes a slight squeaking noise when I turn it and the car it cold. What should I be asking for when I put it in for a service and get the old 'small jobs that add up to £000s' list out next week.
Part exchange for a 7 series? wink

The fluid will be less viscous when cold so a belt replacement and tension check would be the likely first port of call.
I don't think anyone would take my car as any kind of PX laugh so I need to add extra cars rather than replace this one!

The squeaking seems 'mechanical' to me... I will see what my mechanic thinks.

Regarding E55 above ...Wish I had the money for this... I remember one of the car mags at the time, probably Autocar, commenting that it had an incredible mid range. It was only a little slower than the 370bhp Jaguar XJR (I think the Jag was just under 13 seconds to 100 and the Merc about 13.5).

Even on these photos you can see rust on one of the arches. But it is cheap (AND I LIKE CHEAP!)

It may not have the outright punch of the modern AMG v8s but I bet it sounds rather nice.

That looks rough. I love mine, a lot more than I thought I would to be honest. Proving to be a great family car and it does make a great noise and goes very well when required. I'm still considering the secondary cat delete. Get a good one and you'll love it!

How much is a good one though, and are they sound enough underneath to drive for 6 months then pass on for a minimal loss even if they look rough (I don't mind the rough look!)?

Around the 3k mark should secure a decent one, prices seem to be firming up though. As we all know they have a terrible rep when it comes to rust. Mine will be 17 years old this year and is still going strong so I don't see it suddenly falling apart at this stage. Over 6 months I don't think you'd lose a penny on one.

Well, looks like I've sold the E34 525i within a day of advertising it! Just got to get the new MOT next week.
I'm not surprised, you prepare and present your cars excellently. I'll have to pop down for some tips when I thin the Fleet this Spring.

Not surprised, it's stunning. Going to be hard handing over the keys to new owner?
Yes, it will be. It always is...but it's going to a very nice chap who's enthusiastic about cars so that's always good.

Can you post the link to the 525 again - I looked on your site and couldn't see it (probably me!)

Steering damper ? My R129 SL had the same and a new damper stopped it.

I've done the damper, and the steering got a lot better.

It sounds a bit like if you circulated a metal shaft in a metal liner with no oil. It's subtle and has been there for 20k miles (only for the first mile!) but it annoys me a lot.

What a sight. My word, I'd be so proud driving that to work (I must get my W124 to that quality - I never will!).

This looks very proper and correct. Love the interior, but not mad about the Willow (that's just my feeling on things, mind)
