Last serviced 142k. It's almost a pity, 11M miles in 7 years would be quite something!I know that these represent all that is wrong, with oligarch-levels of potential bills, but I actually quite like them. It's my sordid little secret.
This one probably isn't a triumph of packaging having the 2 captain chair option for the middle row which cuts down the practicality somewhat.
Like any car, there's a string of recalls and borkings at honest john - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/mercedes-benz...
Slightly less relevant for this car, but I thought worth mentioning... even the manufacturer isn't convinced by the 2006 R-class declaring one of the derivatives to have been a mistake.
excerpt from an interview with AMG Chief Tobias Moers

Q How do arrive at the decision to turn a basic Mercedes-Benz model into a fire breathing AMG?
A This is a process that involves whether the base car is compatible with the AMG DNA in the first place. Then the proposed AMG model has to be right for its segment and perfectly represent our values. A case in point of a clear mistake was the R63 AMG [manufactured in 2006], which would never have passed muster today.
Thus while the GLA45 AMG woks very well we stayed away from the GLK although with Porsche Macan leading the compact sporty SUV segment in driving dynamics, we will now look very closely at the potential in the next GLK
On balance, probably easier to fix than a Vel Satis though - so I say go for it!A This is a process that involves whether the base car is compatible with the AMG DNA in the first place. What a load of guff from Mr Merc! What about the current E-Class coupé? Wholly incompatible with AMG? Even though the same chassis is the biggest selling AMG ever (C63 AMG)? And how come they're so fond of the ML63 AMG? After all, it is the same chassis as the R-Class! Surely it's just a marketing effort with a bit of randomness thrown in?
The Merc to have, surely, is the one they don't offer in the UK: an E550 Elegance.

That's good you took it for a decent drive. Funny the seats are not heated I just assumed that was standard.
Regards the fault, "driver restraint fault" was the airbag light on too? I've never experienced this one, if the battery is low (car might have been sitting for a while) on charge it can throw some random errors. Ross has covered the others, the no disc is quite a common one.
Just one last point on the ride, it should be very comfortable, from the advert it looks as though its on 18" wheels? Never driven one on the 18's but I'd expect that to be even better than ride on the 19' car.
Providing the inspection goes ok it sounds like it could be a good buy.

-minor oil leak, would need to clean to diagnose, but most likely sump gasket
-front brake pads about 60% worn
-"driver restraint fault" would require a replacement seat mat at around £300 fitted.
Unfortunately, they didn't pick up on the exhaust rattle which I'd noticed, but I did prove this to the dealer.
Anyway, the BMW Specialist said that it was a generally tidy car and pretty low risk, with no outstanding recalls.
On that basis, I shook hands with the dealer on £3490 and left them with a deposit on the agreement that they would repair the exhaust, have the drivers seat mat replaced and put on a fresh MOT.
I should be collecting it towards the end of next week, after which I might take a more active role in this thread. In the meantime, here's some photos...

I think so too. Heated seats would be nice, but I can't be that picky really!
Do you know if there's anyway of connecting my mobile for handfree through the car, or do I need to look at parrot kits for that?
Thanks,
Ryan.
I have it set so if someone phones my mobile and I it saying I'm busy it forwards the call to my car phone. Do you know if there's anyway of connecting my mobile for handfree through the car, or do I need to look at parrot kits for that?
Thanks,
Ryan.
But that's a separate phone number.... Full integration you'll have to look at a kit.

Not in the UK you can't as far as I know. You can get a E550 Elegance in W211 flavour though
Yes, it is badged as E500 in the UK market and as E550 in other places. Came in Elegance, Avantgarde and Sport.
Here's a UK example E500 http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C511258
And a US version badged as E550 (albeit a Sport) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Benz-E-Class-AMG-...

Like that a lot - looks clean and tidy. It's a same it's not an auto. Having run the former SOTW Merc 300CE since last August it was time to buy something capable of more than mid teens mpg figures on my 90 mile commute! I almost talked myself in to a 530d at the main dealers this weekend but I can't bring myself to commit to finance on a big dirty diesel when in reality I want an M3 or M5 for the weekends so I bought a cheap diesel for work.
The Merc is now for sale and has been replaced with this,a 2002 S60 D5 SE for the princely sum of £995. Lovely old bus, near mint condition with 3 owners and plenty of history. Brilliant stereo too. Averaged a claimed 58.1mpg to work and back today, but I will reserve judgement until next refil as that seems optimistic!
