Strange one, especially if you've been using the car. If you've not been using the handbrake and perhaps the garage have used it when it was parked up?
The reverse was true, I've always used the handbrake and 'P' to park, despite living on a flat street. When I collected the car this morning, it was parked in 'P' with the handbrake off. I only note that as it seemed unusual to me. It went off at about 2:20PM on a low loader, so we'll see if it's done by Monday!

I never knew why the ML got such a slagging for being unreliable, they clearly had never owned a Range Rover. That 5.5 engine would be tempting smile
My only anecdotal knowledge is that in my family there have been more Range Rovers and Discoverys than I can count without phoning family members to ask. There have been four MLs of which I know. None of them have ever been particularly bad!

Blimey things have been busy in here over the last couple of days.

Baryonyx sorry to hear about your misfortune. These things do happen and at least you are safe (if a little irritated!).

mccrackenj that's a lovely looking thing, congratulations!

I like the colours and spec of the W124 twin turbo as well. I don't know how they would be with almost double the power and some turbo lag though - probably fairly lethal in the wet and hard on the brakes! If the condition is good it doesn't seem like a ridiculous price given the mileage and rarity.

I stumbled across this on my searches... definitely a bad idea, right? Not my usual sort of car, but a 5.5 litre V8 has appeal.

The car that gave the lie to the claim that there are no bad cars any more.

Mercedes' darkest hour.

Been working my way through the folder of service history I received with the SL, always find it interesting going through things like that, seeing what's been done and even where the car's been. (I'm probably sounding like a total anorak even by this threads standards) this book also came with the car...

Fantastic level of detail on the 300sl, 300sl-24 and the 500sl.

I love settling down and reading stuff like that.

Looks like it could be a nice e34 with the right engine and in an nice colour. £1k and 138k miles.

Calypso Red BMW 525i E34 in excellent condition.

This car has the later, powerful M50 engine, its silky smooth and has a 5 speed automatic gearbox, which has economy, winter or sport mode. The changes are seamless and it pulls very well with no clunks, rattles or unwanted noises. It is mechanically sound and drives very smooth, the handling is fantastic and it has a really nice driving position.

Mercedes' darkest hour.
I don't think they're quite that bad! (At least in my limited experience). I have a friend who has owned a 2002 ML since about 2003/4-ish. It's a little needy at times, but has never let him down. It just conjures up the odd four figure bill, now and then.

Nothing drastic and a LONG way from the utterly dire W220 S500 my brother had. That was laughable - indeed unrunnable after it left the warranty period. It was simply astonishingly bad and he sold it sharpish once out of warranty. His previous car was a late 90s Mercedes W140 S320. That wasn't exactly a paragon of reliability either - both were miles worse than my friend's ML.

Mercedes' darkest hour seems a crowded place - stick to W124s and R129s!! wink

Luckily Chris, I wasn't hurt. Despite the fact I was absolutely shattered, I just managed to muster about enough energy to drive it home, and was feeling a second wind when the fault struck. It could have been quite dangerous, luckily it happened in the dry. The actual 'fish tail' wobble from side to side was quite violent and the tyres scrubbed as I pointed the wheel straight. In the wet, under the same cornering load, it could have broken into a spin! I was in Lane 2 overtaking an HGV at the time...

That sounds genuinely frightening and not what you want when you're overtaking in lane two!!
Has one of the rear brake hoses collapsed perhaps?

I told my dad this and he still went and purchased his slk. It has decided it likes discharging itself again (new battery done) and so he couldn't pick me up from the airport (again)....

A neat design let down by rubbish quality (particularly electrical issues that seem never ending).

Still don't have any pics of the SL, just this one when we just picked it up...

Clear indicators and grill have to go but otherwise all good.

laugh that must be the worst first picture of all time!

I REALLY want an SL now. I have to pickup the w124 and pay the bill next week.

Has anyone here thought of running a 6 cylinder w124 on LPG? I intend to keep it a while and have vaguely thought about investigating.

What does a bargista do when economy is desired but diesel is not?!

My annual mileage could well be going up by 150% soon.

Drive slower? smile
What level of economy is required? An E38 728i can be pretty frugal, as barges go, as can a Saab 9-5 Aero.

I need to keep my w124 given I require w124ness, and in any case it seems to do the same MPG whatever speed I do!

LPG is the answer I fear, although you have to get a pretty sizeable tank so you don't spend your life in petrol stations!

I've done tens of thousands of miles in cheap LPG barges without a single (LPG related) issue.

All cheap, all previously converted, all very high-miles cars.

It really is the answer. 45p a litre at my local Calor centre, on account and paid a month later.

I must have saved £5,000 in the last 3 years, and I've never paid for a conversion.
