I picked up the SL this morning, drove it back from Nottingham to Birmingham and it is now parked up for an hour before popping down to Worcester and then home. Totally over-joyed with it - it is docile in traffic, quiet and soothing on the motorway, but will pick up its heels when prodded in a most satisfying way - I do so see what the 129 converts are hooked on! It even seems to have a 124 turning circle!

I brought home the paperwork when I bought it 10 days ago. It has every MOT, and the majority of its service history - it has had over £4k spent on it in the last 4 years, including two hood control ECUs (one at £980, one at £280!), an A/C condenser and various bushes, oil pipes and brake discs. For a car so clearly cared for, surprisingly it has not had an oil change for 4 years (circa 10k miles) so that's a job for this weekend. My friendly Mercedes dealer printed off my 124's mid-life service history for me (the earliest records are not available) so I will see if they can do the same for this one when I am in there on Wednesday having my wife's E class MOT'd (I can't stand the tension of the phone calls mentioned above, so I'm going to wait in their "customer lounge" and get high on coffee in anticipation of good news!).

All seems well with the SL - oil pressure, temp all stay constant in traffic or at speed, with the only niggles:

- it turns in differently left and right; it runs straight, but there is something out on the alignment so will have that checked.
- the centre dash cubby lid does not eagerly pop up when the catch is pressed, so I suspect it has been forced in some way so will have a look at that when I get the chance.
- the panoramic roof blind extends well, but is very reluctant to withdraw, and the intermediate support spar just does not want to return to the parked position, so will have a fiddle when the roof is next off.
- the side window in the hardtop bears a sticker proclaiming it has a Mercedes approved alarm system, and there are two motion sensors screwed (or not, in the case of the driver side) to the A pillars. I have yet to identify any alarm gubbins, but I'm not keen on these things fouling the pillars so they may go, but it will then need new A pillar cladding pieces.
- the jury is still out on the wheels, and the Bridgestone tyres are not quiet, but I do like the ride with the decent sidewall height, so still undecided what I will do; it does look slightly under-wheeled, so 17" Evo II wheels are a possibility.

Other than that, I'm blown away and cannot believe it celebrated its 18th birthday last Thursday - not a rattle or a squeak anywhere - and it was less than the mooted revised barge limit!

To those Bargistas on the SL trail - get one while you can!!

If you liked that crimson-tastic SEC, chances are you'll also go for this silver-velour one... on account of it providing the, um, 'inspiration' for the later listing.

Fine spot. So, which one is the scam? You might think presumably not the one with the actual premises, proper website, etc.

Looking at the UK Govt website https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ says that the MOT on E456NMG (the red velour interior) expires 07 July 2015, however the advert says " Next MOT due 11/09/2015"

On to the car with the silver velour interior, G597 UJD, and https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ says the MOT expires 11/09/2015, which is of course what it actually says in the advert.

So the only logical deduction is the private advert (silver velour) came first, and is the one from which the text was copied into the dealer advert (red velour).

That blue SEC is the Daniel Curnock car from a year or so ago. I love it.

The ad smacks of his descriptions: balls basically.

Congratulations on the SL Stegel! There's quite a few regulars on here with them now, isn't there? Wonderful cars.

Why, what were you convinced it would fail on? Presumably not a trivial fail point- e.g. worn wiper blades, blown bulb, malfunctioning horn and so on, or you would have fixed them - so did you think there was something seriously wrong with structural corrosion, suspension, brakes etc?
It was the smoke test specifically. I was having EGR issues so I disconnected the MAS for the test but it was still smokey. Passed by some margin. I also had a minor clonk from the NSF over speed bumps, and a road-speed bearing noise from somewhere; again, nothing mentioned.

Not sure if it's been on this thread, but they've been advertising that at £3.5k for months and months.

At £2.5k, looks, on the face of it, great value.

OK it might have done a few miles but it's got FMBSH. And just look at the interior cloud9

Well that looks wonderful and not surprising, really, for those were the brochure colours, smoke silver over medium red velours. But it looks like it needs a lot of TLC. Contrary to the ad, that looks like rust in the middle of the front bumper chrome and if one is gone the other will not be far behind. £500 per end. The walnut in the interior is in bad nick, too. The body looks all round tired. And that isn't an original Blaupunkt (or any Blaupunkt) in the dash. But what an interior!

What's that thing under the rear valance? Looks like a massive plate bolted on where a tow bar used to be.

Didn't spot that first time round. It's actually not central so probably not a towbar. No idea what it is though.

Factory-fit removable towbar. Hanging offence on a SEC but pukka, all the same:

I posted that months ago. The dealer was recommended by he-of-Evo-fame Harry Metcalfe on his twitter.

This car is local to me, and a stunner, 1 lady owner. The local garage is selling and they are a bunch of rip off merchants so i hate to think what cut they will be taking.

I am tempted, but not really in the market for a 2 door. But for someone would be a really good buy!
Both tempting.
Drove past the garage on the way home tonight and the car wasn't there so i wouldn't be surprised if it was sold already!

Thank you!

Unfortunately I have another niggle. It ran fine when I started it after an hour in my car park, but after standing 2 hours in Worcester it ran very roughly, to the point I thought it would cut out, for the 20 minute crawl to the M5, and took another 15 minutes at 70 before it felt its old self. It idled and crawled smoothly when I got off the motorway, but there's clearly an intermittent issue. I'll whip the distributor cap off tomorrow and check the leads.

Try the crank position sensor. Prone to erratic and temperature related maladies.

One for the SL-fans. Nasty plate, bit of a toe-curling ad and 6 cylinders, but might suit a threadist. A little over 3 grand.

Make a cheeky bid and you might pay around £400 a cylinder. Much to like here I think.

Mercedes-Benz 500 5.0 SE 4dr

1982PetrolSaloonAutomatic70000 miles
500 Merecedes SEL (Long Wheelbase) - Low Mileage - 70,000 miles. Here for sale is my W126 Mercedes 500 SEL. The car is in good overall condition with 70,000 miles with extensive service history. The car is finished in Gold with Saffron leather interior and walnut trim which is in good overall condition. The car was originally in possession of an elderly couple and was kept in their family since new. I am the first owner outside of their family. No expense has been spared in the upkeep of the car with a new exhaust system recently fitted and regular services throughout its life, with the last being in July 2014. The Service booklet and receipts are present. The car has benefited from being dry-stored its entire life, the car underside and bodywork are in excellent condition. Cosmetic blemishes are minimal for the age of the car. The 5 litre V8 runs smooth with no rattles and the gearbox changes are smooth as they should be. Luxuries include electric windows/sunroof, air cushioned seats, engine cut-out immobiliser and so on. As an early W126 it has Mercedes 'Mexican hat' alloy wheels. Period stereo and car phone come with this vehicle as well as phone instruction manual. Drives faultlessly and is testament of Mercedes build quality during this period. It currently has 8 months MOT. Open to discuss the car in more detail and happy for any prospective buyers to view the vehicle., GOLD, 4 owners, Next MOT due 15/08/2015, Full service history, Electric sunroof, Electric windows, Air conditioning, Leather trim, Height adjustable passenger seat, Metallic paint, Alloy wheels, Power steering, Cruise control, Central locking, Immobiliser. £4,250

Not only emphatically not-a-new-car in every way, but that colour should make every £449-a-month 6+35 drear-o-matic 4-pot-4-exhaust oily Aggresso Oakley-Belmer shrink into their IKEA sofabed every time you arrive home.

Drive slowly. Rub it in.
From the seller (I asked if anything other that OSF wing rust):

Hi

There is minimal rust to the other wing and light surface rust on one of the front door frames. Service history was regular up until late 80s when owner died. I recently serviced August 14. Service booklet has relevant stamps.

This is most likely to be condensation in the distributor caps. It's a known issue in cars that haven't seen much use. CPS usually manifests itself by complete cutting out and refusal to restart when hot.

Glad you're enjoying the car. They're great value.

What about this one? Much to like I reckon. £1250 asking. Short MOT, but rather lovely; even the air freshener tree doesn't put me off.

Possibly over-spec'd for some, with its fancy electric windows, sunroof and radio.
