Best smoker barges 1-5 large [vol8]

I'm just trying to do the maths here...
There's a surgeon where I work who has one exactly like that one and he bought it new just as I started as a consultant exactly 12 years ago.
Now, I think they were about £90K new in 2003. He's driven it up and down to work every day since between home and various hospitals etc. because I always see him in the mornings going the opposite way to me. I would therefore imagine it'll have similar hefty miles on it.
So, say it was £90K new and worth about £5K now...that's £85K over 12 years...that's 85/12 = £7K.
I used to think he'd done the right thing by buying a new top-end luxury Mercedes SL, driving it all those years and riding out early depreciation. However, that's still an average of £7K/annum in depreciation even spread over 12 years...notwithstanding other running costs.
Good or bad?
Debate...

It would have been a fair chunk less than £90k, I think the 55 AMG was 'only' around £90k and was a lot more expensive than the 500.There's a surgeon where I work who has one exactly like that one and he bought it new just as I started as a consultant exactly 12 years ago.

Also £5.5k is very much the bottom of the market for R230s to the point I would be worried about what it may be hiding.

Probably very little if it drives well imo - 170k miles (or nearly) will put a lot of folks off. Also £5.5k is very much the bottom of the market for R230s to the point I would be worried about what it may be hiding.
No....I'm sure they were £90K at least to actually get then because there was such a waiting list.
I had a neighbour in Glasgow just before we moved to Shropshire when they first came out. He wanted an SL55 and had £125K (IIRC) ready to pay for one...but such was the waiting list he couldn't have one. He was only considered for the SL55 if he agreed to take an SL500 first which should have been £90K but he had to agree to take that first for over £100K just to be in line for an SL55.
To actually get an SL55 was well, well over £100K.
In fact, I remember that SL500 definitely cost my neighbour £90K because he asked me to drive him to Glasgow Airport one day in and bring it back to his house. It was only a couple of junctions up the M8 but I remember being absolutely st-scared driving it. I'd never driven anything so valuable. Still haven't actually......

Whilst I have been scrimping and saving for all these years by bottom-feeding...in the dark...sucking and filtering through the decaying, primordial sediment at the bottom of the lake (aka the Sub-5K Barge Diet); he has spent the last 12 years enjoying the delights of feasting on fresh water-lily blossoms at the surface... in the sunshine(aka the Buy a Brand New Mercedes Diet)...and often with the roof down because I've seen it!
I might be imagining this but he always seems to have a semi-smug smile on his face, of the type you just want to slap out of sheer jealously, as he drives along in the opposite direction in the mornings.
Do you see my face smiling?

TBH I've lost about the same on secondhand cars in the past...So we are right, and they are crucial.

Yes, I got your point, derin! In any case, I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a brand new car.
Some amusing and interesting posts in here today, keep it up! The jaguar factory ones were particularly interesting.
I had a nice drive in the W124 tonight and it's finally (touch wood) starting to feel like i am getting there with the renovations. It's nice and fresh feeling to drive, and has definitely responded to a full service. I had been noting that it was just a little reluctant to start for ages now (ie not catching instantly when you turn the key) which the new battery has cured, and the new exhaust mid section has cured a long running slight blow (the petrol smell has also gone - no leaks found in the fuel system). While it was in I had the suspension checked again, and a couple of other silly jobs done.
The bill was a fairly reasonable £546 - I'm fairly happy with that.
Now I just need to sort the audio and paint. Hopefully I have broken the back of the work!

It seems to me that what we all have in common is a visit to Browns Lane circa 1998! I had one. I remember trim being old fashioned but the installation of the mechanicals seemed thoroughly modern. Anyway, one of my most loved cars was the £250 XJ40 Sovereign 3.6 from Ebay.
My barging life continues. 400miles today with 100 still to go. Indicators packed up at Chepstow. Stopped in an idyllic spot, popped bonnet, whipped out the relay box, waggled relay and they sprang back to life. I wedged some cardboard in there to keep whatever dodgy connection it is intact. Quite satisfying, being able to fix them. Not one passer by asked if I was ok. fkers.
Wetherby services. I hate this place.
