It seems I am alone in thinking that the combination of the 3.0litre 24valve engine and a close-ratio, dog leg manual might be both interesting and satisfying in the r129 chassis.
If my numbers come up, I'll be straight onto that and off on a road trip

A 60 litre capacity (70 litre tank, ish) in a 2.4T V70, E320 and 4.0 XJS gets 275-310 miles in the first 2 and about 240-260 miles in the Jaguar.

That tankful costs £27.

Note there is some petrol burnt in there too (at each start-up), so the picture is not quite as rosy as the figures above suggest. But it is still pretty rosy, IMO.

Definitely get the biggest tank possible.
I think with city driving in my 540 the range is somewhere about 200-250 miles but on a journey it would be >300.

What tankful is 27pounds?
It'll probably be a bit more than that now, at my local station it's 58ppl at the moment.
45ppl today at my local Calor centre, petrol stations are always more expensive. Never a queue for a pump, and a month to pay.

Great info! Shame my nearest centre is 35 miles from home/10 from work and shuts at 5 during the week...

This is unfortunate. Mine is 80 yards detour off my commute, and opens at 8am.

Smug face.

This is most likely to be condensation in the distributor caps. It's a known issue in cars that haven't seen much use. CPS usually manifests itself by complete cutting out and refusal to restart when hot.

Glad you're enjoying the car. They're great value.
Spent 15 minutes this morning stroking my chin with the bonnet up before I realised it hasn't got distributor caps - it's a 119.982 which means coil packs. I need to do some diagnosis, but looks like my SL320 owning friend's warnings of late 119s and coil pack expiry could be right.

Just to cap my day, I did 5 miles in it with my father in law, extolling the growl at high revs (it's happy to rev despite lumpy tick over) to get the oil nice and hot ready to change - and my 9 month old, used twice, Pela oil extractor failed to develop any suction. Not the car's fault, but it is now in tne dog-house for the night. The 124 cabrio made a bid for favourite car status doing 150 miles, mostly roof down, without missing a beat and showing a clean pair of heels to younger euro-boxes. As a reward, I gave it a good clean ready for its MOT on Tuesday - every little helps!

Oh well, sorry about my misplaced confidence. It does sound like coil pack failure causing a misfire is a common malady.

This is probably the best place to ask; what are people using for Bluetooth and USB audio in for a late 80s Merc? I had a new blaupunkt fitted in the G500 which looked ok (the head unit is down low) but was a bit clunky to use. The stereo in the 107 is much more in the eyeline and the Sony unit that's there at the moment is late 90s and looks mince.

Becker have just released another batch of the retro Mexico. A cool £1,600 but it does iPod, Bluetooth, MP3, Sat Nav et al. I have used second-hand Becker Indianapolis Pro models in my 124 and 201, and a Cascade in my 129, they do all of the above and look OK. Otherwise there is nothing that doesn't look like a fruit machine or involve having some awful widget glued onto the dash.

£1600 is about 10x the budget hehe

Been doing some searching; this unit is usb but also comes in a Bluetooth option - and looks pretty inoffensive to me, has to be ordered from Germany though so hopefully it's in English also. Found a few old Merc / Porsche / bmw forum posts about them. Made by Kienzle

I've bought this VDO head unit for my w124 for that very reason- doesn't look too brash. In your suggested budget too JKelly!

Think there's a higher spec satnav version too

That looks quite smart. Do you know if it works with an iPhone plugged into the USB port?

That's pretty smart aesthetically. Would fit most older cars and look subtle in modern ones. *goes off to google*

That's the 1014 like the pic I posted, the 1016 has Bluetooth also which is a must have for me. Both seem to be discontinued and the replacements look bad.

Not sure, haven't taken it out of the box yet, even though I bought it in August!

Booked the s124 to get this fitted plus a load of other stuff done: Dynamat everything possible, new speakers all round, fit under seat sub, 2 new window regulators, remove original phone kit, new sunroof cassette, adjust tailgate dampers, strip and rebuild drivers seat with new MB pads and more that I can't remember. Should be fun!

Crumbs I like that. Why haven't I found it before despite wasting years looking for such a thing?
