I am continually surprised that the whole aftermarket stereo industry refuses to build retail units that look a bit like the sensible units they already build for the OE manufacturers.

Does everyone who needs a modern-kit standard DIN unit really want a epilepso-jukebox?

£1600??? That looks like a big £400 opportunity for an enterprising somebody.

I found that vdo one on my search; but the cd slot and lack of Bluetooth made it a no. Found a thread on a Porsche forum and that and this Keinzle one were the two most-favoured options.

This is the ticket I think; it works same as the blaupunkt I had. Phone in pocket, in car - someone calls, press green button on head unit to answer and talk away. Red to hang up. Also does Bt. streaming audio.

It seems I am alone in thinking that the combination of the 3.0litre 24valve engine and a close-ratio, dog leg manual might be both interesting and satisfying in the r129 chassis.
Floats my boat, too. I have that engine in my 300E-24 with the 5 speed auto box and it's not bad at all. Don't normally rev it above 4K, but when you let it rip, it's a lot of fun. I think a decent, dog-leg, CR box with this engine would be a lot of fun and a great steer. The only downside is the tendency to have a little oil weep. Still, it rust-proofs the underside!!

I think the Indianapolis pro looks the part in my 107, bought when they still made them. I had an aux in and cigarrette lighter power socket routed into the glove box.

The car came to me with a cassette blaupunkt which I still have tucked away, in your shoes and if I was doing it now I might keep something properly old-school in the dash and add aux+bluetooth to it.

What have you already got in there?

It has one the same as this, fitted by the Mercedes main dealer when it was bought as an AUC in 1999.

Far as I can tell it's like music or taste in anything. It's what works for you.

Personally I think the early R129s look dated, the first facelift perfection and the second face lift taking things too far. Some of the last R129s to me look like an old car with new parts dropped on it.

But it's not a hard and fast rule. Take this for example. A 1995 pre-facelift. It's only around the corner from me and I almost daren't go and view it because I want a 97 I6 but it looks glorious.

Are those US indicators or was there a time they were standard in the UK? I see a few cars with them, but there seems to be no pattern - pre- and post- first facelift. My car is Feb 97 and has clear indicators.
Possibly Japanese imports?

I did notice quite a few floating through the Japanese auctions when I last imported a car but I wasn't really into mercs at the time.

Just posting this as it's fairly cheap, and it's not been mentioned. Probably because it's in France! However, RHD UK car and a 500 at that; 5000 Euros.

May have been on the continent for 5 years (tax ran out in 2010) and a very poor advert; but could be worth enquiries and might make a nice road trip on return..

I'm sure R129 fans will find faults even with just three not so great photos!

1998 Jaguar XJ-R £3,450

4.0 litre V8 supercharged with plenty of change from Smoker budget.

Unfortunately the W124 Cabrio which was a up for £2K north of Smoker budget has been sold. Looked a possible bargain at that price.

I remember Tom Cruise driving one of those in The Firm.

It annoyed me because the novel specifically mentioned his character driving a BMW.

30 minutes today epitomises my barging life. I successfully replace the hazard/flasher relay and then the offside headlamp wiper motor on my 124 before going on to "adjust" the headlamp washer squirter on the other side, promptly breaking it. Two steps forward, one back. What will I break while fixing something next?

How could you drive around in that LS without feeling like such a cock?

Yeah, I couldn't do it. Maybe I'm the wrong side of 21.

I broke the aerial trying to fix a new one, broke the speaker grill trying to install new speakers, and broke some panelling under the steering wheel trying to find the cruise control unit. I don't think I am cut out for car maintainance and marvel at the work of proper mechanics. I'm not going to bother trying to fix things again even if the internet declares the fix really easy.

That scrubs up very nicely. I absolutely adore those cars. However, I can't see it selling for a huge amount more than £6000 in the next 18 hours. Those C140's never seemed to grab the attention of collectors like say, the R129 did.

Looks good to me.

Interesting that the vendor says: 'I work in Scotland so will not answer e-mails'; I thought the technology had stretched even that far North these days.
