Meanwhile, the auxiliary fan still keeps running so I have to talk her through disconnecting its connecting when initially she was insisting on the phone that there was no such (HUGE!) fan itself visible on the front of the car at all!!!
Take a look at this video of the front of an E39. Can you see a HUGE big thing on the front that looks vaguely like a "fan" anywhere? I know it's tricky...but look real hard! See if you can spot it!

Wouldn't disconnecting the hedgehog get the same results? I'm guessing that's whats at faultTake a look at this video of the front of an E39. Can you see a HUGE big thing on the front that looks vaguely like a "fan" anywhere? I know it's tricky...but look real hard! See if you can spot it!

I hate cars! And I specifically hate £1-5K Barges!
Derin, I feel for you. It's not just 1-5k barges, in my experience cars pick on women. Tempting fate, I cannot recall the last time I was stranded, but our two non-barges, and their predecessors, have stranded my wife, sometimes on more than one occasion per car, requiring recovery. Take comfort in your wife's mechanical ability; my wife, while intelligent, highly qualified in her profession and happy to turn her hand to many practical tasks, could not disconnect and reconnect a car battery, and as for identifying, let alone disconnecting, an A/C fan, no chance. As for your neighbour, yes, being Belgian is significant without doubt. (My perception of my wife's automotive ability has not been coloured by her reversing her E class into my sparkly, newly repaired CLS last night, on our drive; very minor scuff to each, but apparently I had parked in a cavalier fashion).

(Apparently there's temperature sensor somewhere that can do the same thing? Apparently it's a cheap part and an easy change. Do you know where that's located?)
The trouble is she's flying back on Tuesday (leaving the car in France now for the summer) and there's no way to buy a new hedgehog and get it out there by then. Whilst it's not a big job to change one it's a bit fiddly and I think would be asking too much for her to try to do it.
I think I'll have to take a hedgehog (+/- that temp sensor) out with me next time I fly out. Trouble is certainly the hedgehog looks worryingly "device-like" to be carrying in one's hand luggage?

Any D2 S8 love out there ? My recent acquisition below
2001
4 previous owners (inc one plate change),
99k miles,
Gearbox rebuild in the last 10k miles,
Colour is TBC - no code in service book or spare wheel well
I'm lead to believe its a very rare non-sunroof model.
Currently at Motor Continental in Crouch End, North London, having the cambelt done, together with t-stat, water pump, rollers, pulleys etc, v-belt, new alternator, new front lambdas, gearbox and engine oil/filter change. Four new tyres and lower door trims also imminent.
Lots of knowledge and helpful peeps on the a8parts forum

I must have one.
Who was looking for a pre-facelift grille for a 129? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-SL-129-320-1994...
Nothing to do with me, just came across it on my morning Ebay scan.

Looks very tidy but surely that must feel very weedy and a bit down on power for such a big car, no? Why is it you always find the lesser models are available in nice condition, yet the nicer ones (in this case, a 500 or 560) are hard to find in tidy condition?! So annoying. Classic example is my neighbour has an absolutely immaculate (and I mean immaculate!) E36 316i. Now, you could never find such a tidy 328i anywhere.... Who wants a 316i...!
Probably because noone wants to drive the lower models so they don't wear out!

Thanks for the comments folks - the photos hide a few car park dings but overall its in very good shape.
Planning to avoid fitting the 20" final edition wheels as most peeps do and may consider a set of the pre facelift wheels as I actually prefer the look
With the sunroof delete, this will be a backdated lightweight S8

618 Mimosa Yellow. Quite something. I amuse myself with the thought that when I cop the Euromillions I will taunt my local main dealer by ordering a new car in a colour such as this. You could even have http colour on a 126! It looks pretty great on a 107 (the picture is wrongly captioned). There is a whole website devoted to it here: http://www.meinbenz.de/farben/107/107_580heliosgel...

http://www.mister-auto.com/ for the hedgehog-get it sent direct to Grenouille-land? I've flown with worse looking objects, personally I'd just get one in the UK and fly with it. It's just a massive heatsink and a circuit board packed in plastic. I've flown with a CPU/heatsink/fan and had no problems, just unpacked it along with the laptop.(Apparently there's temperature sensor somewhere that can do the same thing? I thought the internal temp sensor was located in the climate control panel and you need to remove it,check the fans are working and clean out all the crud that collects there.
Never got round to it on mine, just replaced the hedgehog and everything was fine again. I'd also recommend buying the more expensive Sitronic/Bosch/Valeo branded part over the cheapo ones as they seem to fail very quickly. Best solution of all is the upgraded aftermarket part but that only seems to be available in the US.
I thought the temp sensor was below the climate controls
