Looking at it again, what are the wires sticking out here. That doesn't look good!

The wires are where the heated rear window lead should plug in when the hard top is fitted. The wheel is genuinely horrific!

The silver one seems an honest car and ad, but I think it will end up above thread budget - £6,200 is my bet. No mention of a hardtop in the black car's ad, and at that price the vendor clearly knows it has flaws - like so many cars, mine included, the front skirt has met a speed hump at some time. The silver car's soft-top has splits like the black car, but I bet the owner has not left it out in the rain. The silver car gets my vote.

In the history file for my SL is an invoice for new rear windows in the soft-top by a trimmer in Coventry for £450.

In the pictures the silver car is surrounded by other old sheds - I find that strangely reassuring!

They are indeed those wires, but the socket the hardtop plug connects to looks like it has been wrenched out, perhaps when the roof was stolen! One to avoid I think.

That is where the loom for the hardtop heated window connects to the car. It is missing a bit of trim. Console roller is open, too. There are a lot of niggly faults (quite honestly for a change) shown in the pictures with the ad. I'm not sure it would prove a satisfying purchase. I think I'd rather spend a bit more for a slightly better one. Does polish up well, though.

That wheel! If you bought it, you'd have to take a new wheel and some spanners with you in order to replace it before setting off for home!

Okay the steering wheel needs sorting but this is SO CHEAP. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-500-5-0-au...

As a '91 car that should have two tone paint and ambers. Obviously the replica AMG wheels are not original either. I suspect that car is hiding lots of problems - some of them not very well.

Looks lovely Mr Orange! thumbup

Merc beards, a couple of questions if I may:

1. Touch up paint for the grey bumpers, where from?

My cigarette lighter socket isn't quite deep enough for secure connections and the actual lighter gets stuck in the fully depressed position in it. Thoughts?

2. Textured read bumper moulding strip, where can I find one cheaper than MB?

Many thanks.

Also, If anyone finds this, but in mushroom somewhere e.g German ebay, I will love you forever:

1. Assuming you mean the paint for the bumpers and Sacco panels...? There is a paint code on a plate under the bonnet. Now IIRC, that code only gives you the main colour of the rest of the car. You then have to cross reference which colours were available for the lower panels and bumpers to go with that main colour. If you go on to the Mercedes 190E forum I know for sure there's a table on there. I'm sure there are other similar sources elsewhere.

I've probably made it sound complicated but it isn't really.

Once you have the paint code for the lower panels you can get a good automotive paint supplier to mix it up for you. I use this place and they're excellent and they will do mail order:

http://www.borderautomotivepaints.com/

2. eBay...but I did a quick check and none listed at the moment. Only ones primed for paint a la later cars.

It's funny you say that - i was thinking "I couldn't take it into work or show anyone I know before that goes" AND "could I hold that horrific thing in my hands driving it home!"

We've had a couple of these R129s here recently with horrendous steering wheels fitted - does anyone have any idea why old mercs seem to get such treatment?!

I do like it when my posts to this thread get so comprehensively demolished laugh

Thanks Derin. thumbup

I don't have Sacco panels, just the satin grey possibly gel-coat type finish, but I assume a paint could be used to match in pretty well

I am hoping one will appear on ebay eventually, but I guess the chances are slim.

The standard wheels are too big. The replacements look awful, but I do understand them. I'm finding it my least favourite part of the W124 driving experience.

Pick it up on Wednesday, since starting my search I've missed out on 4 decent looking cars up and down the country, then this one turns up 25mins from my house, well chuffed smile

Tell us more please - and photos!

I recently had a Saab estate ahead of me on the A68 - as soon as we got past the speed cameras he booted it and left me for dust. In the real world these are really quick cars!

Only photo I have I'm afraid, I'll get more and put a thread up once I've picked it up.

It's an Aero, so 2.3 litre 4-pot with 250Bhp when new. Will be getting it mapped straight away by a chap called Karl (SaabNoob) which takes it to 270Bhp or so. Fully loaded including 'nav, heated front and rear seats, electric mirrors etc. FSH with just 88k on clock smile

I generally dislike red cars but this colour really seems to suit the 9-5 and it makes a nice change from silver or grey that is normally seen.

It's a lovely colour (I'd call it burgundy) - I've not seen a 9-5 in that colour before.

These are properly quick real world cars - beyond the bhp that you are increasing in any case, and great in the winter.

Bah! Heresy! I find the diddy wheels on modern cars too small (and their rims too thick). The idea of the big wheel is that it offers greater stability at high speed and, if your power steering fails (like that happens a lot), a big wheel gives the leverage to make steering easy-ish. I just find it is more relaxing.

Even if I was in the little wheel camp, I'm not sure I'd go for one of those weird pretzel jobs. Maybe this:

I knew I'd get pulled up for daring to question those 80s German Engineers working under the guiding light of a 3-pointed star, but it's a proper bus wheel.

AMG wheel is lush, but I imagine it doesn't come cheap.

I see a fat bloke with no head doing a hand stand and the splits, not good.

Ouch, that looks really stunning. The leather looks particularly rich. Very nice.

The antenna mast will just need cleaning.

Edit: cripes, I have found the ad and that is a steal.
Yep pretty pleased.

This is the pre face lift blue 500 I was also tempted by but much as I like the pale blue I don't like two tone nor the sombre grey interior. Looks good though.
