I've obviously just joined the r129 'club' in the past month however very happy with the 300-24. As mickyv mentions, very free revving and sounds great, seems to be pretty decent on fuel too. Go and see it and see what you think, I doubt you'd be disappointed!
Splendid! Forgot to mention the fuel. Its very good on fuel. I guess 32-35 on a run is entirely realistic.

What do you think of the 300SL-24? There is one nearish by and I am tempted to view as I am busier than I thought I was this week!
I've had mine for four years, and having researched the model prior to buying it, I decided the 300-24 was the one for me.

It's more sonorous and free revving than the later 6 cylinder engines, and I think the earlier cars are better made and are nicer looking (all very subjective though).

My ideal car ( very early production model in silver with blue leather) came up. It has a 5-speed autobox and heated seats as a bonus and runs perfectly, despite its 137000 miles. Highly recommended.

This is a first series M104 engine, which is essentially an M103 with a 24 valve head. They don't have the wiring loom issues if later cars, but do need revving to get the best out of them; typical 80's multi-valve unit really.

I've driven a 300 SL-24, a 300 CE-24, a 320 TE and, of course, my SL500.

A lot of people urge, "Get the 500, get the 500" and they are right that the 500 has the strength and easy power only a big capacity V8 has. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the -24. It is as MV describes, freer and more sonorous than the later 320. And it is much more of a sports car engine, just as he describes. It revs smoothly to the 7,000rpm red line and it goes bananas over 4,500rpm. Horses for courses and all that but I don't think anyone would regret a -24.

Very cheap, so could be some problem lingering. Or it could be a bargain. Would be worth going to the expense of putting mono blocks back on. I think these will do well in the future value wise.
Wrong wheels, missing wheel arch trims, boot lid badges look to have wrong spacing and location, plus it seems too cheap. Doesn't add up.

Some very interesting comments, thanks! I love straight 6 engines and particularly revvy ones. I do worry that the SL might be a bit heavy for it though so it would end up feeling the same as my W124 with the old 300 engine (wikipedia lists the SL at 1,800 kgs)?

Here is the 300-24 I was thinking of seeing - http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/classifieds-cars-sa... - it's nearby so if the seller gets back I can pop over at lunch.

I cannot really tell the condition from these photos but fancy the colour as a change. It turns out I am likely to be rather busy this week and unable to get down South and there doesn't seem to be any good value SLs in Scotland.

I've think decided I'd rather run something for a while at the lower end of the market than spend £7k+ for now as I need to pick up something reasonably quick so can get on with the W124 with minimal exposure and if I don't like it minimal losses.

Looks good, I'd seen it earlier in members gallery, only thing which I'd question is why he's shifting it after only buying it in December.

It's Imperial Red, which is tricky to keep on top of and can fade unevenly, but looks wonderful.

I believe this must be one of the last 300-24's, so some trim differences to mine, and 8-hole wheels rather than 15-hole.

I think the lower Sacco panels may have been painted, as I think they would have been darker when the car was new.

I suspect that in ten years time, we'll all still be here(!) reminiscing about when these cars were so cheap.

Lovely, but sounds like it'll need quite a bit of TLC - a bit of a blow on the exhaust, but the welder/fabricator friend hasn't been pressed into sorting it out? Hmm...

Not keen on the wheels, but it looks like a well kept car at good money.
Uhuh.... wouldn't touch it with a 10ft barge pole. The location it is for sale, the too-cheap to be true price, the barely literate advert, wrong wheels, missing trim, TWO mobile phone numbers. The alarm bells are ringing loud and clear.

Been lurking around on this thread for little while and thought its about time I contributed. V12s have been somewhat of an obsession lately and this X300 V12 is only about 15mins away from me.

I've managed to get insurance on an XJ6 at 17 but a '12 will have to wait a year or two unfortunately. Shame as it looks like a clean one and its local to boot! If anyone is interested however, I'd happily take a look over it on their behalf if they're not local.

Suppose you want to avoid a 300?

I like these. What are the XJ40/X300 V12s like (I actually prefer the XJ40 looks-wise)? Do they have the character of the series III?

Well done. You have obviously progressed to advanced level barging if you can say "no" despite having the readies there. Was it a shed?

Here's mine, it was posted on here a while back. I missed it the first time but got it the second time around. It's not as good as the pictures show, it has a few parking dings and the drivers bolster is pretty bad, but mechanically I sunk £1,500 into it and it drives like a new car. Love it. Will sort the cosmetics out later this year. The Sat Nav works, so does the CD changer, and it's quiet as an S should be. Bargain!

I really fancied this both times it was up for sale but couldn't quite justify it at the time. I've rather liked a couple of other vehicles he's had up too, and have him "saved" as a seller on ebay (despite the fact that, pictures aside, I don't particularly like his adverts).

Love it. Give me a shout when you sell it.

I've only very briefly been in both but I felt the XJ40 (XJ81) contained a little more character of the SIII compared to the X300 (X305), but neither come anywhere near the amount of character an old SIII V12 would have.

If you're a little mad however, much like myself, and consider running one daily, you'd be better off with an X305 as it should be more reliable than the XJ40 equivalent. Should at least as reliable as they got as they were the last of the V12 variants.
