Probate auctions I expect or links with local solicitors who sell the cars to them when dealing with the deceased's estate. Relatives don't normally want the hassle of inheriting an old car or trying to sell it themselves.
Ah...that could be it.Links with Care/Retirement Homes in Devon etc too perhaps?

How about this AMG CL500? 20% over budget, but with New Year wallet-busting potential like no other.
Awesome performance (and angst?) for the pound.

Just off topic and budget once more (sorry)...
But I was looking at this mainly because the number plate has the first three letters of my surname...maybe better for the "Really Bad Number-plates" thread:
http://www.ghostmotors.co.uk/97TURBORGREEN.htm
But when one reads: "Excellent low mileage..." coupled with: "Excellent history file including many invoices for works carried out..." all within the same paragraph, I can't help but think that the slight twinge that I feel in my buttocks as I read it is telling me that in reality I'm not and never will be in the right league to own something like this.

That one is too expensive to do this with, but couldn't you buy a cheap one and apply the bangernomics theory to it? After all, I suspect that much of the engine, running gear etc is pretty straightforward spannering-type skills that your local garage can take care of. If you picked one up for around top thread budget and ran it on a shoestring, it may not be that expensive in a relative sense. I'm sure folk have done it - would be interesting to hear the experiences.

Thanks r129 - just a pioneer head unit, nothing special. General audio is a later project!
This sounds rather interesting: www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C569882# £1,999
"A phenomenal, 1 lady owner from new, with Full Supplying Main Dealer Service History by Mercedes Benz!!!
Sadly her husband passed shortly after purchase so absolutely EVERYTHING was done by the supplying dealer, even wiper blade replacement, bless her!!"
Makes me feel like owning another 190. Ultra-low spec and colour combo appeal too! This sounds rather interesting: www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C569882# £1,999

After nearly 10 years living in Germany, I could live with Taxi-spec, but absolutely not Taxi-colour. [Although it's miles better than white.]

If I know my wife, she'd prefer the ivory one. And so would I, I think. There is something pleasingly Spartan about it.
So, if I get it for her, I'm going to need some help. First, it's down south and I'm up north. Second, what can I get my children, parents and siblings out of my remaining budget of £2.50? Mercedes keyring? Good idea. New wheel trims off Ebay? Better idea.
Push the budget and you could have this W124 sun visor mount bracket clip: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-W123-W124-W126-...

If you were setting out to build an S124 E55 wagon with the W210 5.5 V8, would you go pre or post facelift for the donor car? Colour? Engine and gearbox are irrelevant obviously, but I think I would *need* leather / MB Tex and heated cow. Can electric seats be retrofitted?
I'm thinking Smoke Siver early car with black or brown leather interior and aircon. That's the essentials.
This won't come in under thread budget obviously.

I was going to say I'd go pre-facelift on the donor car because I suspect the electronics are a little bit simpler. But the change is so electronically complex either way that I don't suppose it makes much difference. Quite an animal it would be.
Mulling the 190. £207 to insure.
And I am really enjoying my friend's 140. It certainly has überholprestige in spades. And even though it is "only" the 4.2, it really hauls above 90. Slippery, your 600 must be the ideal motorway bruiser.

A dark green early 4 door for me. Black leather, more to chose from here: http://www.w124.co.uk/interiorcolours.html

Well, I've just drawn a complete blank down the shops. Peaked too early. Should have waited until Wednesday lunchtime before even thinking about it.

If you can get down via an airport to London, I'll try and help as I'm local enough to heathrow and Guildford If I know my wife, she'd prefer the ivory one. And so would I, I think. There is something pleasingly Spartan about it.

I agree. Personally, I'd prefer the Ivory one too.If I know my wife, she'd prefer the ivory one. And so would I, I think. There is something pleasingly Spartan about it.

I had a 2.6L and yes it was a bit smoother but to be honest it didn't really light-up the world with only about 160 bhp.
The appeal of that Ivory one is that it has all the elements that make a 190 a great car with none of the frivolous/unnecessary extras.

Mercedes made a 4 door, if I wanted a 4 door I would just go and buy a 500E / E500. The point is that the S124 is one of the best estate wagons ever. 7 seats, self-levelling suspension, stupidly large load capacity etc. Also very handsome. derin100 said:
Ok...completely out of budget, off topic and more suited to the "What car have you been obsessing about today" thread but...
Can someone tell me why these appear to be so cheap? Granted, £11500 is still a lot of money but I remember back in the '80s a friend and I used to virtually press our noses up to the window of Jack Barclay's in Berkeley Square in the West End and look at things like this that were for sale for sums of money that just seemed unimaginable to us back then. I suppose much as current day new or nearly new Rolls Royces are today...maybe even more so because they'd be in the window for six-figure sums even back then when we were living on student grants of £3000/year.

I'm not sure exactly what I'd do with it other than just polish and stare at it but what a thing to have, huh?
(p.s It would be utter lunacy....wouldn't it? )

S1 Continental by James Young - surely no finer way to spend £80k
All the Silver Cloud 3's are gorgeous. I hadn't realised they were now so much money. Again, just beautiful to look at but hard to picture driving it beyond owners club events or fine Sunday runs in the country.
