What do you guys think a 300e24 saloon is worth spares and repair?

Any specific parts worth money, eg engine?
If it has a five speed auto, that is worth something. They're quite rare (they were a cost option) and they break.

A leather interior in passable condition always has value. Ditto wheels and wood.

The engines are pretty worthless.

£300 to £500 seems to be the going rate for such a car in the Merc club, although it also depends where in the country it is.

Depends what is salvageable on it I suppose. Probably 'worth' scrap money. If you have time and space (and inclination) it could probably break for more.
I removed the front suspension and it's never been replaced, when i removed it, it was a bit rusty in places so i dont want to put £1.5k of parts on it, for it to fail an MOT and need welding which i have no knowledge of, hence would be expensive.

I also need a bigger vehicle, possibly an old ML for the load space as not everything fits in the small car we currently use. So even working its not the current vehicle for my needs.

Its a 4 speed with cloth sadly, has an old school kenwood tape player and cd changer though, lol.
Cheers, are the 4 pot calipers worth anything?

Bulbs: I fit Osram off road bulbs H4, 100/80W. These are available on Ebay for less than £20 a pair. Er, not strictly legal in the sense of non-compliant with construction and use regs (which specify 60/55W) but I've never had any trouble with people flashing me and they make a big difference.
When I met my wife - 25 years ago - she had a Polo with pitifully dim headlights. I planned to fit higher wattage bulbs but was put off by my (admittedly mechanical) engineer friend with tales of over-heating relays and melting wires. Are those concerns of no consequence on 90s MBs? After 10 years of Xenon headlights, 129 and 124 lights do appear pretty poor.

I thought about that. Haven't had any problems so far!

This is the 1-5 smoker barge thread- we laugh in the face of melting wiring looms,

Until that is we get the bill.

Possibly more useful than that is my experience of using Philips Xtreme H4'sin a r129 which seem to offer a useful increase in illumination with no side effects.

Any thoughts on this SL 500: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

It appears not to have a radio?!

I'm really no expert but to me that is my perfect SL, the right two tone colour combo, right wheels, black leather, amber indicators, early'ish car, 500 V8, sensible miles, sensible price. Stick a nice Becker Stereo in that and it would be perfect! Get it bought. It could of course be a rusty POS.

Alternatively how about a twin turbo 300 SL with low guide price for auction on Sat?

The silver car had me wondering about the digital speedo on an early car, then I read that it's an import- worth checking for some mileage verification, though they haven't advertised a low mileage. Hopefully means rot-free, just get it Bilt-Hambered to look after it going forward. Lovely colour/wheel/gingercators combination.

The red SL is ex-4star iirc, could be interesting if the price was low enough and original wheels and steering wheel were fitted.

The 100,000mile silver car looks pretty good to my eye. I know it's cheap, but the 200,000mile silver car would need a really convincing maintenance history to win my preference, all other things being equal; the 200,000mile car looks like it's had paint on the front wings, too.

A glowing loom may make up for the absence of heated seats in the SL, but on balance I think I will give the Philips lamps a go - many thanks.

I fitted Osram Nightbreaker to my s124 and it made quite a big difference without going too high on output.

Ooh, good suggestion, thanks - I have some of those in the garage, but not sure if the right type.

That price is a at a dealer meaning they paid somewhere close to £2k, that gives me an indication that the car is one to avoid

Could be a bargain at £2.5k (or even less) if it's as good as it appears to be!

Yep I had a near new Corrado VR6 back in the mid 90's and it's lights were shocking. Likewise with one of the last ever E39 Tourings. By comparison my W208 xenons were a revelation!

Has anyone considered these LED replacements?
