The replacement has a few marks, picked it up on e-bay last week for £75 so can't complain and my eyes don't hurt looking at it. Only the indicators and number plates to go.
Looks miles better!

I have a vague recollection that the individual vanes on the grille might be available to buy from MB rather than having to buy a whole new grille if it's just a couple that are damaged on yours?
Thanks, being able to buy the individual vanes would be ideal. Going to pick up disks and pads for the s210 tomorrow morning so will enquire then.

It's the front screen on mine. Will leave it until the bodywork then.

You can get individual vanes. They're not that cheap. I bought two after hitting a pheasant at speed and bending two bars of the grille. They were about £35 each. The colour didn't match (I guess they fade when on the car) and they are riveted onto a plastic structure. I never figured out how to remove the bent ones nor how to fit the new ones. I think even if you were confident with a drill and rivet gun, it would be a very tricky job. I bought a new grille on Ebay in the end but then hit another pheasant and bent it again. Duh.

Enthusiastically replied!

I had a lovely 350 mile run today in the W124. It is running well at the moment (touch wood!) and I managed to get an hour or so behind an RS5 making good progress on fairly empty motorways so the miles were dispatched relatively quickly. These cars have a feeling of being built for such a task.

I tried the M6 going North/South for the first time in ages and it seemed like a good decision compared to the painful mile upon mile of 50 mph we now have on the A1/M1. When will it end?!

Thanks, on that basis I'll probably just leave it as is. I'm much happier with it as I hated the 'facelift' grill!

Any of you Mercedes guys know anything about this car? http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/classifieds-cars-sa... Or can offer an opinion in general. I've joined the forum to find out some more info, but I can't PM anyone as I've not build up the required post-count.

Thanks.
Corr blimey trousers that is the business. I love the light brown leather. It goes great with the green. I'm sure that car was sold by Avantgarde about eight years ago. It featured in a main article in Mercedes Enthusiast at about that time. None of the deficiencies strikes me as very serious.

I think the car you are referring to was for sale at autobarn ( what happened to them?) as I went to see it and to this day regret not buying it. It was malachite green though and this looks like tourmaline. It was featured in mercedes enthusiast and the writer said it was the best condition 124 coupe he had ever seen. The interior in that colour is even nicer in the flesh.

Does anyone have the bumper paint-code for pre-Sacco panelled W201/W124s? I'm normally good at finding the info I need, but this one is really eluding me.
They are self-coloured, i.e., unpainted, the plastic coming in the requisite shade of grey. I think if you had to paint some to match, you'd be looking for gallinit grey but I cannot find a code. They're available after market relatively inexpensively, I think. Like £100 a bumper.

I see. Thanks.

Not sure I want to replace the bumper given it's only a scratch, might have a closer look and see if it won't wet sand out, but I think a bit of paint in there would definitely help.

I was liking that until I saw it had no MOT. You'd have to be mental or prepared to break it.
Derin recommended a bumper paint for these, which leaves a slightly textured finish. I used it on my 230TE with good results. I'll see if I can find his e-m when I get home and post a link here if I can.
Here's the link.

Many thanks and apologies for my terrible quoting. I think that might do nicely for the rear insert and I think I am going to risk wet-sanding the main bumper, since the scratch is very shallow.

The problem with having a nice example is that any imperfections are hard to live with. That and parking as far away from everyone else as possible.

Going to look at an S124 on Monday. Not going to lie I'm pretty excited. Way more excited than I should be for a 200,000 mile 25 year old car. GF also hates the idea and I REALLY need to sell my focus first (on here for £600 - anyone?) but fk it. You only live once right?

Hmm some interesting food for thought, Ok I'll let you into another link from my eBay watch list to get the opinions of the Benz enthusiasts: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161659555011?_trksid=p20...
Love that - almandine? Just needs some zebrano wood and I'd be in heaven.

cat220 - your SL is looking much better without that hideous grill, was that really facelift on the 129? I thought that was the 231's grille.

After 10 years of Xenon headlights, 129 and 124 lights do appear pretty poor.
Yep I had a near new Corrado VR6 back in the mid 90's and it's lights were shocking. Likewise with one of the last ever E39 Tourings. By comparison my W208 xenons were a revelation!

Has anyone considered these LED replacements?
http://www.auto-lighting.co.uk/product-eng-5763-H4...

It's amazing how far light technology has come along. Getting xenons in the E65 was incredible.... Until I went in the M6 which has the adaptive LED lights which are nothing short of amazing.... They make the xenons look pathetic. I do wonder what they're like to drivers coming the other way though!

No, it was a stupid aftermarket fit that some owners must've thought would give a modern look. You can't legislate for good taste!

It looks nice, doesn't it. Slightly disturbing stain on the front passenger seat though.

Thinking in advance, but which would be the 'least risky' (I know) V12 to go for within thread budget? W140, W215 or E38?

Yes. I havent had one, but I think they are a less scary prospect than the others. Simpler, more old-fashioned, and more DIYable. Also a good second-hand parts supply.

Of the ones you list, I would guess the W140 would be the least likely to rock the boat.
