Or an XJ40 V12, if you can find a nice one.

Or a nice Series III V12! biggrin

If you can live with a two door car which has only marginally more than two seats, the V12 XJ-S does have a couple of big advantages over the saloons. They're a very charismatic car with a unique feel and good cars are rising in price at the moment, which can usefully offset the horrendous fuel costs of a full fat V12!

I'd vote for the Jag as least troublesome. Parts are cheap and expertise widespread. They seem simple enough to DIY in many respects. Very little of the nightmare electrics that pervade the Germans. The problem seems to be rust and cheap repairs more than anything else.

Did anyone attend the Anglia Car Auction sale today? I'd be keen to hear what the Light Ivory 230 TE made. Don't tell me £600.

I had an X300 XJ12 and it was a smashing thing. Heavy on suspension components, it was a heavy car, but there is almost nothing to go wrong with the engine and it's a GM 4 speed autobox so that'll run until the sun goes dark. No CANBUS or fancy multiplex wiriing, so electrical faults are very simple to trace and fix. Rust would be the only issue, as with the X300.

I'm always on the lookout for another. The Daimler version gets much nicer Autolux leather and I believe earlier models were available as SWB.

Thinking in advance, but which would be the 'least risky' (I know) V12 to go for within thread budget? W140, W215 or E38?
The unlisted Jaguar.
As in X300?
Yes. I havent had one, but I think they are a less scary prospect than the others. Simpler, more old-fashioned, and more DIYable. Also a good second-hand parts supply.

Of the ones you list, I would guess the W140 would be the least likely to rock the boat.
I should clarify. I have had an X300. A 4.0. It was wonderful and I would recommend one to anyone. I have not had a V12 X300. Such wanton lavishness is not aligned with the Jim Parsimony Charter.

Definitely. Mine is a '95 model and is SWB.

After all the V12 talk I have to go and find these, is the fuel tank issue really that much of a problem? How many are likely to have been fixed? (Would go perfectly with the OH's Mora E46!)

Mine doesn't have any evidence of fuel tank corrosion. It was the first thing I checked when I was buying it. It was pristine in those areas.
Now when I change from summer to winter wheels and back I do a clean-up underneath the car and spray clear waxoyl diluted with white spirit all around that area.

It is quite the looker. If the fuel tank is in good shape, it'd be a good buy. Though not a hard job to get done, if it needs doing, just pricey once you factor in the labour.

There's an honest looking X300 XJ12 on eBay at the moment for just under three grand.

I've just bought one (3.2)!
I had a V12 XJS once, if that helps?

They need a fair amount of right foot to make progress but the engine is very smooth and sounds nice so it's no hardship. The 728i is not a fast car off the lights in the context of modern cars but nor is it a slow car either. It is perfectly able to keep up with the flow of traffic without screaming its head off, and refined on the motorway. I drive slower cars than that regularly on all sorts of journeys and never feel that I have been made significantly late by absence of 'go'. The quietness and comfort are very pleasant and they do a lot better on fuel than a V8.

This. They aren't fast, but they are adequate. They're a 140mph car. The gearbox means the 0-60 time, in reality, does not reflect on how the car feels once it gets going.

They're pretty superb on the motorway.
