I can see where your coming from about the concours thing. An acquaintance had (maybe still has as I haven't bumped into in a while), an Escort Mexico. It was nice and in superb condition. But if he drove it anywhere he claimed it took two weeks to properly clean it all. I used nod and say all the right things at this point but couldn't help thinking the man was insane. Nice car though and certainly a good investment.
Concours is for the mega-rich really - get someone else to spend weeks cleaning it up before the competition. biggrin
If that's a thing I reckon I'll stick with being poor. Get someone else to spend a long time making your car look like it's never been used to stand around while someone judges how unused it looks before pouting it away again ready fro the next event? Sounds like a blast.

It's not often I beat the Woodster, but I was in with that car at 0850! In fairness, you bothered with photos!

You forgot to add that if your car gets less faults and holes nit-picked in it than everyone else's you get the satisfaction of walking away with a cheap plastic trophy! rolleyes

I like a nice clean and shiny car, but the law of diminishing returns has fully kicked in with Concours.

I like this. Light spec, simple lines, small wheels, subtle colours.

A great family bus, and completely unembarrassing to own. Keep it clean and it would look right parked anywhere.

worth scrolling through to look at the Mercedes content, in particular an E220 saloon for peanuts.

It was worth scrolling even if just to see that a few of those Mercedes fetched less than a 1990 Ford Escort. Why would anyone pay £1100 for a 1.3 l Escort?

It's very rare that beat you both, but actually I posted it last night on the <£1k thread. It's much better placed here though as it would need a bork fund on top. At that price it's bound to have something wrong.

I know - I credited you with the find in my post!

I'd agree that it's probably too good to be true, but the dealer is a LR and Jaguar specialist, so they may simply not be interested in a car they don't know much about and just want rid.

Certainly worth a viewing if anyone's local. I confess that when I saw your post in the Bargain Basement thread last night, I planned a route to it and pondered skiving-off today!

Thoughts from the experts please, I'm tempted with this:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

Too expensive? Too thirsty? Not enough grunt? Electrical problems? Timing chain issues?

Very near to me and very tempting. To be used daily, mostly urban, 10k miles a year. Couple of long holiday runs to the continent.

Wallet itch.

I guess the attraction was that it was basically like a brand new Merc for a fraction of its brand new cost? I did consider doing one of two things:

A)Keeping it for years as a daily runner because it was so 'new' and it would have lasted me for years!
or
B)Keeping it in pristine condition and doing concours events.

The trouble was it was a bit "boring" and so I probably would never have been able to stick to Plan A. Then if I'd started to put miles on it I would have quickly shaved value off it.

Plan B was probably never going to be a go-er either. It turns out that the MB Club would have dock it points in any concours event simply because the mileage was so low. I would have been starting from behind the rest of the field each time! Plus, I could never really be ar$ed with concours events anyway.

So, I just sold it for what it owed me.
I should've expanded on that point!
I wouldn't say that it's by any means a bad car, but I do think that they're dull to the point of becoming somehow ugly.

I tend to like Mercedes a lot, but those not at all.

A very good friend of mine (school mate and best man) is selling his S124. He's a lapsed MB Club member and serial S124 owner - his last one was suspected stolen to order and shipped south. He's now hankering after an S210 and looking to sell.

Cosmetically, this one isn't concours and at £1.1k I'll probably mention it in the bargain thread as well but I know he's put money into the mechanicals with a long-term view.

A friend of mine had a c200 (or 180?) kompressor from the same era and it was a nasty sounding engine that gave poor fuel efficiency. I would imagine this would be as bad in the E class chassis.

From that era it should be a M271. They are all 1.8 litre and are badged in various Mercs as 180,200 or 230 depending on state of tune.

I haven't encountered many in an E Class but they're OK in a C where more usually found. They're a bit whiney and the timing chains have been known to have issues but they're pretty good on fuel. A C180/C200 Auto can easily do 40-45mpg on a run and high 30's in mixed diving.

They're way better on fuel than the pre-2003 180/200/230 Kompressors if not quite as reliable.

I'd absolutely defer to confused buyer in terms of a genuine expert, but I reckon that for what it seems you want it for it looks OK.

Small engine in a big car, but decent spec. Looks modern and free from rust. You'd need to look at what else is out there to get a feel for whether it's cheap or not, but I suspect it would fill your needs very competently, and I think it looks more classy and up-market than many newer cars.

As an aside, idiotgap's friend's (I had to think about apostrophes) S124 would do the same thing for 20% of the cost if your family can bear the shame of rusty wings.
