Mine did that when I got it, indy managed to lubricate it away somehow and hasn't been a problem since.

Almost 2 hours left to get the price up though.
£1,849.00 5 min left.
And finished at £1849

Someone's got a good buy if it lives up to expectations
hmmm...

I'll add that I bought (and still have , and am now looking to let go) a black 525i e39 Sport, aside from that fact mine is an Sport so has all the M bumpers, sport interior and the 18" parallels its basically the same car.

I've had to replace :-

The ABS ECU - they die from heat £220
The Cam Cover - they warp and crack, then piss oil everywhere £350
The Aircon charge - an o-ring had let go £50
The CCV system hoses, and clear out the dipstick tube £100
The hose clip on the PAS resevoir £2

Having read up on the forums, it seems that all the above are common faults - so whilst the new owner thinks they have bargain, I think they probably have another £7-800 worth of work to go within the next year and thats if they do the work themselves.

Of course, mine is all done now and it drives very nicely indeed - but I'll be wanting nearer £3k for it as a result.

My advice, if you are thinking of buying an e39 cheap then allow an extra £800 - £1000 on top of your purchase price, or buy one which has been fully sorted.
The above goes for pretty much every car on this thread, by virtue of the fact your buying a 10 yr + old car, anyone buying one expecting to get a nice example 'just so' must expect to shell out several hundred pounds, as most folks have learnt even the very best examples always require something...... It's when it runs into thousands, that's the time to worry!

Hmm. I must have spent £1500 on mine by now and there is still the infamous shimmy to attack. This is a very nice 100k example with no rust, box rebuild and FSH.

Cooling refurb. Still popped a rear coolant hose, the only part I didn't change.
CCV
Centre drag link & other related bits.
Auto box service.
Welding to sill (hidden beneath plastic)
Hedgehog
22mpg

My point is, its a medium sized barge but a full size money pit. Definitely recommended.

My 03 530i auto touring has been remarkably good, apart from one rear air suspension bag and a new rad, but I think it was well cared for previously. I think coming from D2 A8/S8 and R33 GTR may give me a different view of 'low cost' though smile

Unfortunately a rather dozy driver smashed the rear bumper & damaged the tailgate so I'm waiting for the insurance quote to see if they try and claim it as an uneconomic repair - if they do then I'll try for a cash settlement & fix it myself with 2nd hand bits, as it just works too well to let it go. Saying that I'll probably fix it and the gearbox will die or some other major borkage smile

MPG currently c24-26.

Not usually a fan of red interiors, but that is quite a nice darker red. Not like the comedy red-nose red some cars get for an interior.

I agree - actually it's looking unusually bright in the photos after a fresh application of leather restorer; it's already settled down to a nice vintage-port shade!

Love the cringeworthy question...
"I'd like to offer £1,900 for the car. I'm sure that may seem low, given your asking price but please bear in mind that the 535 isn't quite so favoured as the 540 among the cognoscenti & condition is more important than outright mileage."

I don't feel too bad about the 23 mpg I've been averaging in my 540i Tourer of similar vintage now. Quite a bit of it is running around too, not many long runs at 75 mph to bring it back up to more like 28 mpg...

Yes, how to win friends and influence people, don't insult their car.
