In the same vien, somebody PLEASE buy this before I end up with 4 cars and no GF. £999. £999.....FFS. I spent more than double that servicing my '55......

Yes, saw that on the budget thread, unbelievable. But it has to be a potential money pit, tyres, exhausts, discs and rear suspension all very expensive and at this mileage something must need doing. But so tempting.
If you went into that with run it until the MOT is due and then break it, you'd almost get the purchase price back for the alloys. Mine is still on the standard exhaust (stainless), disks used to be very, very expensive but now heavily discounted by Mercedes so no more expensive than any other e-class really.
Someone from the mbclub made contact with the vendor...

Sorry to burst the bubble chaps... I just phoned him (he's a dealer, not private) and told him, "do not sell it! I want it and will pick it up tonight for that price"

His reply in an Indian accent: "Oh sorry mate, it's actually meant to be £2999, not £999"

"Goodbye"
Noticed this type of thing in adverts recently. Seen a few cars with low prices such as £2999 and then in the ad copy its says 'Car is £3999, not £2999'. I don't know why they bother.

Under £1k i believe that the advertising price is cheaper. If they skimp on a couple of quid for an advert, would they skimp on safety and maintenance work.

Starting a deal with a lie is not an acceptable sales technique for me so it's nice of sellers to give you advance warning to avoid them.

If you feel particularly aggrieved at wasting time on reading the advert, you can report them to AT for a misleading price. It's rampant at the lower end of the market, unfortunately, partly I think in order to suck people in to taking out finance on something they couldn't otherwise afford

Yes, its the 320 with the "loom issue." Had a large amount of it repaired/replaced in the past already, so will probably have to go the whole hog next time.

I took the hardtop off today (and opened the bonnet!).

These have to be the 1-5 barge enthusiast's convertible of choice - comfortable, good at speed, and excellent value at the moment. The W124 does seem a bit like a range rover after though.

Sorry CDG I will stop posting pictures of your former flame - though your W124 cabriolet was stunning, I'd be very happy with that indeed.
Just back from 48 hours in Germany, where I saw surprisingly few 124s for a change, and no 129s.

Glad you're enjoying the car 0a, but I confess that your enthusiasm is not making the car's departure any easier! They are wonderful things.

Sorry! Get that XJS and I'm sure you will banish the memories of the R129.

As part of my "shakedown programme" (otherwise known as liking to drive cars that I buy too much!) I've now done 5 full tanks of fuel in the 500SL (over 1,400 miles).

The car is now smelling strongly of fuel when still or newly started - the internet suggests this is a fuel filter issue which is pretty cheap and easy to rectify (replace it!). It smells strongly in the boot (seeping up from the filter which is below the passenger rear wheel?) and outside the car.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

I have another 500 miles to cover over the weekend and the W124 is up North - the fumes seem to be okay at speed though!

The bad pics hide the very tatty bodywork. It wouldn't start when I went to see it.

Not starting is not good, maybe they are getting desperate to offload it, hence dropping the price.

Gosh, that's ace.

Old Mercs of this type manage the clever trick of being lovely, no matter how tatty and crap an example it might actually be.

Rovers also manage this trick, but I reckon Jaguars and BMWs don't.
It's a pretty, pretty, pretty car!

Wow...that Phaeton is indeed very tempting... great way to a W12 ownership.
I've had an 08 3.0 V6TDI Phaeton for the last few months so can't talk about the W12 engine but I personally think Phaetons are lovely. Just budget for changing both batteries if they are over 5 years old and the front anti roll bar drop links. The majority of the electrical problems are caused by the second 95Ah systems battery being to old and causing glitches. The other battery is only used for starting the engine. Oh, and they both live in the boot....

FARB drop links are £44 a pair and you can fit them yourself easily. You also have to buy OEM windscreen wiper blades as no aftermarket ones fit. Thay may seem strange but remember this is a Bentley Continental GT underneath. Ferdinand Piech had a number of vanity projects and this is one. He even had a factory built in Dresden specifically for it. Google Phaeton glass factory. If you drive your Phaeton back to the factory they will even give you a free tour if you book in first. I should be going July/August time.

It's a future classic and to be honest now I've got one, if I could find a W12 for the right money, I'd consider buying it myself.

Some very good info there muffy, the only thing that I struggle with now is the acres of wood inside - it came at the wrong moment and now somehow looks badly dated, even when a Bentley etc doesn't with wood.

I'm guessing because of its complexity isn't it going to be the type of car that, if anything goes wrong, has to stay unfixed because it would almost write the car off?

What are common W12 problems? Can the gearbox cope with the torque?

Funny, I typically hate Volkswagen but I adore the Phaeton and all that wood. I'd happily own one.
