1989 Mercedes 560 SEL Auto

NO RESERVE.

That's all you need to get to the auction.

They have 2 300CE-24's as well, a red one as well as blue, both estimated around £1500-£2500. Both high mileage with lots of service history, the red one is an ex MB owners club chairman's car both serviced at John Haynes Auto Technics for the last decade and more.

I might have some time free Saturday afternoon if anyone wants a once over before making a journey.
Whilst acknowledging that I may live to rue this moment, I'd be really interested in a PH-er's views if you were able to view. The ad on the dealer's site says it's an import, so it would be interesting to know from where and whether it has much in the way of SH records. My real concern would be rust and/or filler, and the state of the expensive-to-replace trim, panels and interior.

I do like the colours of this one and, if it was in decent enough nick, could just edge out the XJS as my preferred next car. If, as expected, such a purchase was to end in mutilation and/or divorce, I could blame this thread and you in particular for not discouraging me enough*.

  • Would be great if you could see it and pass on your views. Thanks.
Took a few photos this afternoon.

Current owner is, as thought, the car dealer himself. Was acquired from a guy called Mike Chapman in Sheffield. https://www.linkedin.com/pub/mike-chapman/3a/80b/b...

There's a fair stack of paperwork going right back to the original service book and invoices from Normans in Mayfair. Quite a bit of work spent recently on timing chains, brakes etc.

It's clearly had a re-spray at some point and possibly a light restoration - maybe by the SL Shop as that appears who the previous owner bought it from. It's had welding work around near side rear arch and looks like a fresh boot floor. It needs the near side rear arch doing as rust is bubbling up. Previous job could be filler or the white powder under the scratch could be polish - didn't have a magnet with me. Front near side wing near the headlamp is bubbling up too.

Interior looks very good and whilst I didn't check the operation of anything no trim looks broken. Handbrake gaiter lightly split and neither seats lock their backs when in the normal position.

Fluid weeping from rear of engine near anti roll bar and also from front. Possibly water unless oil has been changed very recently.

I have to be honest I was expecting far, far worse and the interior was a pleasant surprise. From what I could see, and bare in mind I know nothing of car restoration, the rust didn't look a big job at all. I'll only say that I had a friend that restores VW Split campers and its when you take the wing or skin off that you really see the problem!!!

I think this one all comes down to the quality of the restoration is received late in it's life.

Worth a viewing especially as I got the impression he'd be open to offers given not his normal stock. Within thread budget would, I suspect, be fairly likely.

You should be able to now. Have to add ?raw=1 to the end of Dropbox image URLs to get them to be viewable within forums.

Was a nice day for a view and the dealer had plenty of time as no one else there. It's also extremely fortuitous that I was visiting http://www.bittervirtue.co.uk/ to stock up on some beer for a party tonight which is barely 100m from the trader!!

God it would be cool to have a good 560 SEL or SEC.

Probably not as my only car though.

Oil pressure looks a touch high for a warm engine as well, no?

Either way this is a good area to buy from, right on the borders of a very well-moneyed and retirement area. My parents are about 5 miles away, I could pop up and take a look next weekend as I'm heading over if anyone fancies it and needs a preliminary.

I quite like the look of this 300CE coming up at Anglia next month

[

It would need re-ambering, but could be a good buy for a couple of bags if it looks nice.

Equally interesting is the maroon 300CE - it was for sale in John Haynes showroom not long ago (at just under £5k). I had a nose at it while in there and it looked a very nice one. Just needed some leather seats.

The red one is nice. It has an amazing spec: air con, heated, electric, orthopaedic seats, twin airbags, VELOURS.

That 190 looks lovely.

Would it be remotely possible to run one of these as a daily driver, or is that a ridiculous idea? I only 'need' to drive 12 miles a day and have other cars.

Lovely - my favourite spec of Daimler and 4.2. Sure the green one has been posted previously as it's on my favourites. The silver one looks very nice too but that front number plate would have to go.

Posted this in the "classics left to die" thread, but I thought a few people here might find it interesting (and sad!)

This Mercedes 560SEC seems to have been abandoned in Casino Square carpark, Monaco. It was covered in a very thick layer of dust, and the tyres looked ancient but with good tread, suggesting it's barely been used in the last 10+ years.

The condition is actually very good - there's some scuffs on the bumpers but the car is totally rust free and would look fantastic with a bit of care. It's a shame to see it like this, as I've always wanted one but the decent ones always command high prices.

Watching this thread with interest now, I'll be flogging my 530i soon and I'm on the lookout for a nice E38 735/740i! Would love a 750il, don't think I could stomach the running costs.

What colour was it exactly? It looks like Barolo, in which case it would be solid rather than metallic?

I love the colour and the spec!

Seriously tempted to register to bid by phone, but I must resist, I must . .

I really can't remember sorry!

Both the coupes are pictured on the Goring seafront which is just around the corner from Haynes so I suspect they are selling both through the auction. I guess they have given up selling them at a price worth their while so are clearing space.

Have you seen BMW's press campaign celebrating 40 years of the three series? I am sure I am not alone in thinking that the product has only got worse as time has passed. The E21 looks like a masterpiece; the F30 a dog's dinner.

I don't agree. For Me the F30 looks fine but the E36 was the best.

I will have a good look at those photos later - I do like the 450SLC. Somewhere deep within me lurks the inner six-year-old part of me which still regards the SLC as an 'ultimate car'. Much more so than the SEC - I like them very much, but unlike the SLC they don't register on any visceral level.
