Purchasing Ferrari 550s and going for drives in 918? Rather beats my blowing up of my Saab!

"Interior needs little attention"

Don't you just hate it when you're changing the interior colour on your car and your rattle can runs out before you're done.
Might be a good purchase for £1500, definitely needs a new interior though. Worthy of inspection if you have room for a project.

Are any R129 owners from this thread going to the Silverstone Classic on 24 to 26 July? The Merc Club is organising a parade of r129s on Saturday 25 July. I have just bought discounted tickets. It's a good event and the Merc Club display parking in the infield is a good place. I'd recommend club membership: for the £35 subscription, it's a bargain.
I bought tickets before selling the SL to 0a.

Still plan to go though, although obvs in the A124 rather than an SL!

When buying a used Jaguar super-saloon, be sure that the previous owner was not a spluttering lunatic.

I have had more than my fair share of lousy ideas but taking a rattle can of black paint to the interior of your car, and selling it halfway through the job, really is a premier league brain fart.

This guy is a real leader in the field of advanced-level, high-commitment misjudgments.

I did note this when I collected the car from you. Unfortunately that's one weekend I can't do.

A good reminder about the club membership though. I am sure your lovely A124 will be very welcome though!

I need to sort front to mid sections of the exhaust for the SL some time soon - taking a look at it up on the ramps it's had its time with plenty of previous repairs that need a permanent fix.

Cheap, fast estate, although there's something about the ad that puts me off. The implausible reason for sale, perhaps?

I get a good vibe from that... True test would be arriving to inspect the 3 kids and people carrier! Honest about rust issues is the bit that I like.

Dunno, I quite like that E430. The VRN (sort-of) indicates ahole, which amuses me.

Seems a decent ad. These days I'm always quietly flying the flag for the s210, really like mine. Really is all the car you could ever need!

Agreed. I've been on a W210 tip for a while it has to be said. Non-rusty ones with good histories are pretty rare but they do exist. My favourite engine in that car is the 320 petrol unit. I prefer the drive to the W124 and, lord knows, I've had a few of them.

To be fair they're designed to be thrashed! Why buy a big v8 if your not going to use it.

The 210 is undoubtedly a more modern car, and was a big step forward in NVH. As W124s with any attributes seem to be climbing in value, there's undoubtedly good buys to be had with the 210 - in particular V8s and the fact you can get it with a relatively economical and powerful diesel.

For me, I am more of a classic car chap - the old fashioned interior and drive of the W124 is what I prefer!

Agreed, agreed, agreed. I was gutted by how good a pal's S210 E320 CDI was. 45mpg on a run, quick and a thousand times more refined than my diseasel 124. And yet, and yet... I wouldn't swap for all the tea in China.

The one thing that I would swap with a modern car is the braking performance. The family mk1 focus TDi has far sharper and better brakes than my W124 (and I would probably say the SL). Modern braking performance is the one think I would like to update my old cars with. I understand that the 300E is particularly bad here.

I can't go because we're driving back from hols nr the Loire that weekend. We did go a few years ago when it was the 40th anniversary of the start of R107 production and joined the parade lap... Great fun and very memorable! I can certainly second the recommendation for club membership www.mercedes-benz-club.co.uk

Any excuse for a pic.

Funny you mention brakes, my SL has been fitted with grooved disks, no doubt a bit ott however it does stop well.

I think at least part of it is subjective: moderns have very sharp brakes which I always find take a bit of getting used to, coming from our old bangers; but I'm not sure they're leagues better. If you were dead keen, you could retrofit the big brakes from the 300-24 and 320 models to the 300E. And on the SL there is a Brembo upgrade which was standard on post-June 1998 cars and is anything but weak. I would say, when was the last time you had to slam your brakes on, except I was out in my 124 yesterday and had to slam the brakes on, and thought to myself, "Hmm, it didn't exactly stop on a sixpence".

The w140 looks good in silver, and you won't go wrong with a 67k mile example. Congratulations, I bet it's incredibly comfortable on long trips!
