The w140 looks good in silver, and you won't go wrong with a 67k mile example. Congratulations, I bet it's incredibly comfortable on long trips!
Wonderful vehicle. Congrats!

The one thing that I would swap with a modern car is the braking performance. The family mk1 focus TDi has far sharper and better brakes than my W124 (and I would probably say the SL). Modern braking performance is the one think I would like to update my old cars with. I understand that the 300E is particularly bad here.
I think at least part of it is subjective: moderns have very sharp brakes which I always find take a bit of getting used to, coming from our old bangers; but I'm not sure they're leagues better. If you were dead keen, you could retrofit the big brakes from the 300-24 and 320 models to the 300E. And on the SL there is a Brembo upgrade which was standard on post-June 1998 cars and is anything but weak. I would say, when was the last time you had to slam your brakes on, except I was out in my 124 yesterday and had to slam the brakes on, and thought to myself, "Hmm, it didn't exactly stop on a sixpence".
I do agree that modern cars are more servo'd, but swapping between modern cars and our older cars, I also think that the absolute capability is lacking.

It only really worries me when I'm on a busy motorway and suspect the Mondeo in front can stop quicker than I can. I mitigate by leaving longer distances, but I think it does limit the higher speed capability of the car.

I had to slam my brakes on about a month ago and in that instance the performance was good enough, fortunately!

Your suggestions on upgrades are very interesting indeed. I shall investigate!

The size of the box that the front pads for my 300E come in is worryingly small!

Cheers, hope you're right about it not going wrong! Yes very chilled place to be in a traffic jam/on the motorway!

They have bigger 4pot brakes up front (and need expensive new arms when the balljoint wears).

Sounds like its been thrashed, hard.
To be fair they're designed to be thrashed! Why buy a big v8 if your not going to use it.
There's mechanically sympathetic giving it some eg letting the oil warm up a bit first and then there's starting the engine, straight to redline whilst cold, thrashing. This sounds like the 2nd option.

This really surprises me. I have to really shove the pedal on my Jag - the pedal effort is considerably greater than a modern car and the brakes are much less sudden, but they can pull the car up very strongly.

I'm not picking up the thrashing from that ad at all. Funny how we can interpret ad's differently.

Agreed. Struggling to see how anything in the ad points towards how it was driven badly. I've been avoiding 210's and looking hard at 211 estates recently. Ads like this make me wonder if I should reconsider....

Doesn't sound thrashed to me, either. It's a high spec car, even a glass sunroof. I can't tell whether it has ADS suspension: that might put someone off. Vis-à-vis a w211, I think it's not a fair comparison. 210s are all much older and their character is much closer to the traditional Merc character. The 211, fine car though it is, strikes me as a lot less Merc than what went before.

I like 210's and the v8 especially so. Lovely ride and can hustle as well. Easy to maintain as well apart from the plugs which can be a pain. This one definitely seems worth a look if your in the market. Usual rust check, but there are good ones out there.

That staining on the leading edge of the back seats is (I believe) leaching up from the carpets - so they have been fairly wet at some point.

My car has the same thing - though with crimson carpets and oatmeal hide, the effect on mine is a bit worse.

Though it's not a disaster, it is something to be mindful of on a higher-priced example like this.

XJS fall into 2 categories really - the leaky ones and the ones they never built.

W210 is a much much more Mercedes-y experience. W211 isn't so much a Mercedes-of-old as just a generic nice car.
