Here are the connectors I mentioned in my earlier post Ross...

I put the connector onto some wire I had left lying around and then hard-wired that onto the battery in the car as you can see on the Daimler below, which then means I can put the boot floor back in place and just connect up via my wire each time it is left garaged:

Same setup on the E39 (which is even more of a pain to get croc clips onto as the battery cover thing is held down by 3 nuts):

Once you have the connector spliced in you can also knock up your own accessories. I have put a female cigar lighter socket on one for example, which means I can just add an extra 12v socket into the boot whenever needed. However of most interest to your needs is probably this extra long croc clip extension cable I made so I could connect up the mower which is parked around the corner from the garage:

The beauty of this (for you) is that you could shut the bonnet over the wire or thread it through the kidney grille before connecting. The main charger/240v bit can then stay safe inside in the dry and only 12v electrics are out in the elements.
I think you've just made me realise I need some huge fk off crocodile clip extension cables.... Off to Amazon...

Alternatively (as Electrics are a total dark art to me and I hate them) make me some and I'll pay you biggrin

Effectively I need something to connect the crocodile clips from the charger and have that finish with more crocodile clips to connect to the charge terminals in the engine bay.

Edit - Hmmm can't find any on Amazon....

Hello chaps, long time lurker on this thread, my Merc beard is somewhat lacking but thought this might appeal:

Welcome to the barge madhouse. With appealing posts like that, you'll fit right in. Looks a rather nice old bus.

That can't be left un-remarked. Rather lovely car, with a rather magnificent engine.

Black wouldn't be my first choice, and I rather suspect there are more V12 badges on it than strictly necessary. 6 and a half seems optimistic in pricing terms, despite low miles, doesn't it?

ETA - actually, the price for a 600 seems in the right sort of ball-park.

Rolls-Royce V12?
I'd love to turn up and ask him to show me the balancing a coin in its edge trick. In fact I'd bet him the purchase price it's complete bullst.
Thankfully, the listing has ended otherwise, had you turned up and made him that bet, it might have been the quickest £3.5K you'd ever lost! biggrin

Yes, if it is as it claims to be then I would consider the price fair.

Given the apparent drying up of the supply of nice 126 560 SECs I keep waiting for the 140 coupe to grow on me, appearance-wise. But I'm still waiting.

These scare me.

Not only would I not fit due to a compromised cabin, but I also know nothing but internet chatter about them.

Is this a good introductory/starter V12?

If not, what is?

I am 6' 4" and 200lb and fit just fine. The V12 isn't the problem, its rot.

V12 delivery is not an issue, obviously, but how do they perform? I wouldn't want to go any less than I currently do with regards to hp.

Rot, eh? Looking doubtful that it would be the correct V12 already. It has to stand up to some weathering for me.

At the risk of stating the obvious any V12 featured in this thread has significant risk attached, be it rot, electrics or mechanical. They all have reasons why they've had free fall depreciation in addition to sub 20 mpg.

If you expect to buy an £80k car for sub £5k and not have problems I'd suggest you're likely to be disappointed. It's high risk, high return, the risk hopefully reduced by good research.

But don't let that put you off!

Thanks for the reply.

Mechanical and electrical I can handle; I have read enough and gathered enough ideas (and prices) for ballpark figures and I expect the required price hike above, say, a V8.

Its the bodywork which I will need to be alightly more durable at the moment. I drive a 15 year old car at the moment, so I'm aware of what the age of car can potentially be.

I keep coming back to Mercedes for this, though....

OOOF!

I love this- is it a huge gamble given the 189k? It looks good, I love the interior and lack of satnav/tints and it has FBMWSH?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b...

Not *that* great value as I paid not terribly much more than that a couple of months ago (albeit private rather than trade) for one with half the mileage, FBMWSH and still under BMW warranty etc.

That one's been on sale for ages. The interior looks shagged - worth factoring in a grand to recondition it properly, unless you can live with it.

The cheaper M5s out there at traders tend to not be in good condition as the ones being sold by their owners, having looked at a good number of them in recent - and not so recent - years.

The BMW E38 was actually home to one of the most heinous of all barge interiors, namely the 'Aubgerine' leather. Cunningly disguised as black leather in some photographs, it's actually a vile hue of purple. Grim.
"Lavender" was the proper name for it. Full Marine Blue and Oxford Green interiors are pretty horrific too.

So it's that time of the year where we all start reflecting back on the year that was. 2014 was, for me, the year I really got into cars. Despite being a 32 year old father of 3, this time last year I wasn't sure what end of a spanner did what. Fast forward 12 months and I'm quite confident at servicing, I just need something big and bargey on the drive now.

Anyone got any highlights of 2014?

I absolutely bloody loved this one from Springtime. Knowing what I know NOW (lower petrol costs, payrise etc) I should have bought it there and then. As it was... well you snooze, you lose.

10 months later I still find myself hankering after a Bornite S124.

Then you might have to prepare to be disappointed. They are a lot slower than your S6. Though I'm not sure what you expect from a 295 hp car with a three speed slushbox that is really very similar to how it came out in 1975.

There are far more knowledgable Jaggists on here so I would welcome comment, but I find it a bit odd that that car is on an H plate and described as 1991, as the facelift (which that isn't) was 1990, wasn't it? Presumably a fair number of the older cars hung around dealerships unsold for a long time. That was certainly true of Porsche in the 1990/1991 recession.

That one *claims* to be a private sale...

Still, "189k which for this V8 engine is only just run in" is an automatic turn-off for me *sigh*

So we have finally bought it. Thanks to Oa for finding it in the first place. I'm more excited about driving this car than any before, including my r129, including the 996 my dad bought brand new on an ill-advised whim when I was a very young man. It's also going to replace a 2008 Golf TDI!

Does anyone have any advice about seat covers? MB did fitted covers in matching cloth (called "Schonbezug" auf Deutsch) but I suppose they have been NLA forever. Lucy was thinking about some sheepskin covers for the front seats (for winter comfort) and nylon for the rear bench (to protect against our boys). Any leads gratefully received.

Magnificent! My 190 had (and still does, it's still running) that exact interior, amazingly you can still get little bits of trim that colour in the dealership!

Looks immaculate, what size engine is it? Matt) BeirutTaxi on here) had one for a while, a 2.0.bthe engine wasn't the healthiest but it was a nice enough place to spend time. Little cramped in the back and quite buzzy and slow by modern standards but it did have a nice sense of charm about it. Sadly, it went to car heaven! I do think it needed a 6 cylinder up front though.
