The r107 sl 560 should hit the seas in the next week or so! Won't be in thread budget by the time I have done it up but thought might be of interest to some here smile

im rather impressed by the braking on my 30024! didn't realise it had different brakes?
They have bigger 4pot brakes up front (and need expensive new arms when the balljoint wears).
Lucky its had new suspension parts recently then!

This really surprises me. I have to really shove the pedal on my Jag - the pedal effort is considerably greater than a modern car and the brakes are much less sudden, but they can pull the car up very strongly.
A lot of modern cars don't have much better brakes in terms of absolute stopping power, but they have bigger servos and more clever ABS/ABD systems which means you can stamp on the pedal and get full force with relatively little leg work.

That said, it's always worth investing in decent brakes. I find Mintex 1144's to be a very good balance between performance and wear, not badly priced either.

I'm more BMW then MB as a rule, but find myself quite drawn to CLs...

...except why do MB insist on making them strict 4 seaters? It just instantly rules them out.
What does it rule them out for? It was never intended as a large family saloon: that's what they make the 4-door S-Class for
I don't have a large family... but just occasionally, we need to take 5 people in a car. My wife's car is an Aygo, which is only a 4 seater. I wouldn't care how uncomfortable/squashed the middle victim was, so long as we could put one in there and belt them down. But only 4 seats is a compromise too far.

I do agree that modern cars are more servo'd, but swapping between modern cars and our older cars, I also think that the absolute capability is lacking.

It only really worries me when I'm on a busy motorway and suspect the Mondeo in front can stop quicker than I can. I mitigate by leaving longer distances, but I think it does limit the higher speed capability of the car.

I had to slam my brakes on about a month ago and in that instance the performance was good enough, fortunately!

Your suggestions on upgrades are very interesting indeed. I shall investigate!
Are you referring to the SL? Only ask because mine has astonishingly good brake performance for such a heavy car. You have to give them a good prod but it really has decent stopping power even at autobahn speeds.

The SL has a long-travel and progressive-feel brake pedal, I find. As you say, you have to give them a good prod. This is disconcerting for drivers of moderns, accustomed to snap-on brakes à la Audi/VW. I remember my mother driving it and saying the brakes were very weak. Mine is a late model and has the brake assist feature: hit the brakes in panic and you have to pick bits of the steering wheel rim out of your teeth. I seem to recall in period Autocar found it to have the best brakes from 60-0 of any series production car. The 124 is definitely weaker, though, at least on the standard single piston sliding caliber brakes. The 300-24s have 4-piston brakes off the SL500.

Maybe circa 800 kilos lighter in saloon trim?

Tyres (unless your talking racing) are as important for stopping as brakes, with good rubber old cars are fine in modern traffic, if the car doesn't have ABS you just have to learn how to avoid locking the wheels up. I've only over heated my brakes once and that was in a tired Porsche 924 (drums on the rear) chasing a mk5 Gold GTI over a mountain road, the peddle went soft so I slowed down.

Good point, I just assumed Oa would have good tyres, my SL performs brilliantly on Goodyear F1s. Best upgrade I've made to the car really if not the most cost effective (that was the steering damper at 22 euros)

Some budget stretch there on the Audi.

The Porsche I love to hate but I had the chance to take a then new Cayenne S (2007 vintage) round Assen and I was faster and smoother in that than I was in my DSG Golf GTi that I owned that the time. The Cayenne is a fecking ugly car but really very capable.

That does look nice...they've put about £54,000 in fuel into it, but depreciated much more presumably. In total less than £1 per mile by my shonky man maths.

Good point regarding the tyres, mine probably need changing. As it happens the SL has gone back into the garage today (I collected the W124) for... a steering damper!

Terrible ad and pictures, but a 66k mile 4.2 A8 is pretty rare. I quite like these simple looking early ones as well. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A8-4-2-66-000-miles...
