My W124 has quite a bit of wind noise at speed. I don't mine as I like to know when I'm moving. I can see how it could appear unrefined in this regard compared to more modern machinery. Engine and tyres are inaudible.
After driving over 1,000 miles in my SL this weekend, I can confirm that my W124 felt so smooth this evening.

I can't tell how bad the rust on this 430 is, but it looks like a lot of 95k mile car for the money. It desperately needs the badges removing.

Just me that think those wheels, that big, look awful on anything and everything?
I'm probably not the best person to comment as I have them on the e55, I think they look great on it. These days there are base model Audi's with bigger wheels. That 430 sits a bit higher so doesn't quite suit the wheels.
I can see it rides a bit higher at the front but the back looks like it's collapsed.

Agree with all of the above!

Cool car with great luggage carrying capacity and build quality...too much wind noise at speed. Hence my wife's S124 E320 may be going up for sale on Ebay soon pending the outcome of a phone call that I'm expecting regarding an alternative Barge with a blue and white stylised aircraft propeller symbol on the bonnet in the next 10 mins. wink
Another 5 series touring?
Very, very close indeed, my friend! smile A Saloon!

Fingers crossed for you Derin!

If the E320 is anywhere to the standard of your project cars that will be a great buy.

Off topic slightly, the blue and white of the BMW badge was actually derived from the regional colours for Bavaria. Later fashioned by PR of the time to evoke a spinning propellor.

This is true.
This maybe true....but I doubt it. laugh

Sadly, for other reasons which I won't go into here but which are now resting very uncomfortably with me, W124s but even more so the Mercedes fraternity in general are no longer particularly "Flavour of the Month" with me anymore. This is especially so at this present moment in time.

I have become very "disenfranchised" to say the least and it's now time for me to go back to "the hole" that they think I came from, m'thinks...which was always BMWs. I will sell off my Mercs, at whatever costs to get rid of them... then stick to BMWs in the future.

It's not the cars....it's the people.

Oh dear.

As the forefront of all Mercedes knowledge and passion appears to belong to members of this thread, then I can only apologise for our behaviour.

And why is everyone keen to get out of S124s at the moment, is there something I should know?

It's not here Woody...it 's their "Club" (and that's the most important word i.e "club") that is inhabited by self-satisfied but more importantly self-serving A-holes.

I'm upset to hear this, I've had good and bad feelings about the club over the years but accept its not a selective organisation and one run by volunteers. I've never been tempted to sell up though... As Woody says, there is something of a community here though plus other forums, UK and international you can turn to if a particular one turns sour for you.

You said you wouldn't go into details here so I won't press you, but like Jonathan I am curious...

The club is great for the technical resource but you don't have to spend much time near it to become exasperated by the attitude of some members / officials. Not enough to make me walk away from MB, but I can see your point.

At first I thought you meant dealers - having been more than happy with a dealer 20 miles away for 7 years, the departure of "my" team leader has seen satisfaction fall off a cliff, and it's dealer service that is more likely to see me change brand.

I echo Woody's comment - this 124 exodus is quite worrying!

I don't want to sell my 124, mines purely for the practical reason that a 300-24 with 200K+ isnt really ideal for a 100mile a day commute. From a money point of view, not reliability or comfort!

Same here, more work miles and the desire to finish my project 124 are my reasons for moving on, otherwise it would be staying. TBH I can't see any takers anytime soon for what I want for it, so it may well be staying and getting mothballed for a while....

The 550 journey was gooooood. smile Will get some pics up later.

Think this is the same seller of an estate lpg'd e55 posted earlier in the thread that is also priced at £999 to skimp on advert fees. .

Since this seems to be the densest gathering of MB facial hair on t'interwebs.

Been looking at S211's for a while now, and have narrowed it down to an 05/06 edition of the 280 or 320 CDI flavour. Found this one at the top of thread budget with 150k on the clock. Seems to be in good nick with reported FMBSH. What should I be looking for in terms of preventative maintenance done, or wear and tear items due around this age/miles? Problem is that I'm 180 miles away from it. I have someone that can probably go and look at it for me, but he doesn't know MB's, so what questions should he ask?

So, did you have a look at this? Price drop now to 4350! What's wrong with it?

It is sad to see some mongtwazzle has spoiled things. I think you should take a moment out before you actually sell though. It may well be that you still decide to sell, but decisions made in the heat of the moment are do not always turn out to be the right ones.

The reason I say this is not potential money losses or costs, it is simply that if you do find yourself hankering after a W124 again, you will struggle to find as nice a car easily. They're old nowadays - most W124s are a bit rough round the edges.
