Best smoker barges 1-5 large [vol8]
Discussion
I've said it before, and I know I'm out of step with thread-opinion, but I really can't feel the love for that model (was it the XJ40?) The massive headlights just don't work in a coherent design-sense, and overall it looks bloated.
Compare it to the svelte old one I posted higher up the page, and then try and tell me I'm wrong.

Who wouldn't buy a car from a man who uses a BMW bottle cap wheel as a hose reel?

I'm really liking the look of that, lovely. I wonder if I can blag a trip to Cornwall tomorrow... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-BMW-540I-AUTO-GREEN...

This looks to be a really nice one. I like that a lot!W00DY said:
A nice X40 is crisper than a fresh bank note and a design masterpiece. No-one will argue that the twin headlights don't look an awful lot better however.
Subtlely menacing. Simple yet enchanting.
An excellent riposte, Woody! Subtlely menacing. Simple yet enchanting.
It's not a secret that I love the 'Forty. They're beautiful, lissom things. I even like the Fishtank headlights. They're as Eighties as Margret Thatcher's shoulder pads.
It was a good time for big car buyers then. All three choices were beautiful and distinct - whether it be a Mercedes, Jaguar or BMW.

A little over budget at nearly 7k, but 'offers invited' Recent work done and sounds a decent seller.

I know this car and the pricing strategy has been discussed since it was posted, but I wanted to add that I think it looks a cracker. Really good ad too. Good work mccrackenj, and I hope it goes to a worthy owner very soon. W00DY said:
My father's starting to look for an estate for those times they take my sisters children out, I wonder if I could persuade him... I might "need" to borrow it on occasion mind .W00DY said:
That looks promising, needs the 4.2 but is still a barging bargain if you can get it sub 2k.cat220 said:

Is anyone up for meeting at The Concours event in Edinburgh in September: http://concoursofelegance.co.uk/
Yes. We intend to go. Probably on the Sunday but maybe Saturday afternoon. It would be great to get a barge 1-5 contingent meet up at the same time!

Seems a fair price. That is the neither-fish-nor-fowl first facelift which I like least of the three era. The steering wheel is a welcome departure from the ugly original, but I am not sure it quite works. It will be very nice to use though, I bet.http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C630985

Edited - I think that got the 'new' Ford-financed engine didn't it? Presumably worth having?

From April 1994 the AJ6 was replaced by the 238bhp 4.0 AJ16, with the switchable electronic gearbox, which is supposed to be a worthwhile step forwards. More power and better on fuel. I have only used the 16, so I cannot comment on the 6.
The AJ16 is more sophisticated than the 6, apparently over 100 new parts (!), but is still pretty simple. I have remedied a few running problems on mine, and I am a dribbling buffoon.
Kingfisher Blue is indeed very popular, but personally I really like it.
ETA: the first facelift got all the metalwork changes to rear lights, rear window, and apparently a huge number of almost invisible changes to the way the body is constructed. An enormous number of small parts were replaced by a small number of much larger parts. I read the bodies of the pre and post facelift cars might as well be different models, so much did Ford change and modernise.
What it didnt get was the modern bumpers. I find the intermediate car looks neither venerable and Templar-cool like the old cars, nor sleek and disreputable like the last cars. But I am a prat.
EETTAA:
I might be wrong on the gearbox in the first facelift, as the seller claims there is a sports mode on his. But the button behind his gear lever is different to the rocker switch behind mine, so there was a further change of some sort between that car and the last.

I'd also be up for a couple of pints on the Saturday night (the 5th) in central Edinburgh if anyone is about - the old man is coming up Saturday afternoon, and I have promised to show him a few real ale pubs in central Edinburgh.
