It's not a car: it's a classic investment.
This all has to go "pop" sooner or later, surely? Anyway, as a 124 owner I should be pleased: it all rubs off.
Old Mercs always do well, because they only get cooler. There isn't a way to look bad getting out of a pre-75 Merc. I reckon 124s would be doing a lot better if they weren't so good at surviving! This all has to go "pop" sooner or later, surely? Anyway, as a 124 owner I should be pleased: it all rubs off.

I don't think you'd feel let down by the 430, won't have the same push as the 55 however by all accounts it's a great engine. Driven a CLK with the 430 and it drove very well. I'm sure there was a 430 estate for sale on retro rides recently.
Thanks, useful info - I'll widen my net. The RR E430 seems decent, though I'm not a huge fan of silver (or grey leather). - edit** this one... http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/179401/2000...

That 628 is glorious, those look so much better without spoilers.

I like.
Is the interior original? Liking the details like the red ash trays
Congratulations CdG, that 190 looks very charming! A question to you and other owners of learner/young drivers... Do these old mercs attract nice low insurance premiums?
I read somewhere else that corsas/fiestas etc. that every 17 yr old wants consequently get written off in large numbers which gives them a horrendous risk profile and therefore high premiums. Though my eldest has 11 and bit years until he can start learning, you never know things might stay the same. I'd love to be shopping around for a 190 for him in 2026.
I think we've seen this car before...
So I checked... I called it rhubarb and custard then which gave me handle to search on, CdG had spotted it coming up at the anglia car auctions:

I'm guessing its the same one - can't be factory interior though I don't think. I've never seen anything like it.

Re: cheap premiums and old Mercs, after viewing the green W124 E200 a few pages back, I popped into the office and chatted to the 20yr old, just passed test receptionist about cars and I was extolling the virtues of a solid W124 and how it would be significantly cheaper to insure than the knackered old Clio she had (paying something like £2k for the Clio in premiums) describing as you did above the higher risk profiles of Corsas, Clios et al. A quick comparison site check using the registration from the E200 gave an annual premium of £13.5k!
Like a News of the World reporter, I quickly made my excuses and left.

So keep them out through insurance, same as any car over 50bhp per tonne .
Insurance. The newly-acquired 190e costs Madame et moi £230-ish (rather more than the 124s interestingly). If I add my daughter, it rises to £1100-ish for the year.
So, the bill for her, with the cover still in our name so she's only a named driver, rises by about 900 quid, which compares favourably to just about everything else I looked at, which goes up by an average of £100 per month. As a student, she really only needs cover for a few months a year so I'll probably cover her just for the holidays. I reckon that additional experience will help bring her premiums down, so accumulating a NCB now isn't vital.
As for the car itself, and in answer to Derin, yes it has aircon. What's more, it works. The vendor spent several hundred pounds on new parts and gas, and it now works well.
Youngsters tend to want small cars after they pass their tests, but I think the visibility you get from the older glass-heavy models, along with the fact that scrapes and bumps really don't matter, rather weights the argument in favour of older mini-barges/sheds.
Obviously we in this thread tend to be biased, but I've done the Victorian-dad thing of saying that as I pay the bills I get to choose the car! So far, I seem to have got away with it, but my wife returns tomorrow and will see it for the first time; wish me luck!

Does anyone know the paint code for the lower (Sacco) panels on that car? My wife's 124 Estate is exactly the same colour combo and I'm just getting it ready to sell. I know the main (dark green = Malachite Metallic) colour is code 249.
Cheers!
Up to chassis number 298225 it is 6856 Tropical Green. From chassis number 298225 it is 6304 Malachite. I assume it's the former if there is a contrast.Cheers!

This looks like a lot of car for the £4,900 classified ad price http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-JAGUAR-XJR-V8-S-C-A...
I wonder where this will finish - what a fantastic looking machine. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-E31-BMW-840CI-SPORT...
Realistically where do these sit in the running costs spectrum? 7 series level?

Looks like a great buy, and I like the colour. The ad is nice and honest, and £1,250 for a 91k mile car seems like good value.
