The art of motor trading.

13 June 2015, £2,625: http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auct...

11 July 2015, £4,995: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-Mercedes-Benz-300-3...

Of course, the same car was on sale at Haynes for aeons at £5k, so we'll see how he does. It's probably a hard way to make money, given at the very least it will have been polished and hoovered out. And however you cut it, it's a nice car (in need of re-ambering).

Good luck to him, but I'm not sure I'd be paying nearly 5 grand for a saloon, even though it looks nice.

Whats up with the runs on the drivers side front wheel?

Probably Autoglym tyre dressing which hasn't been cleaned off after applying it and then moving the car for photos - it sits in the bead area

As I posted on R129's, er, R129 thread I just collected the 500SL. I asked my mechanic to look into the power steering system and ensure that it would pass an MOT at the end of the month (I had low fluid levels about a month ago - since I topped it up the level hasn't moved though!) - he removed and greased the power steering pump, replaced a shock that he found was leaking, and did the tracking. £129.45 (I did like the £129 bit).

Fingers crossed it seems to generate low bills for getting stuff fixed, at least so far. The A8 4.2 I had was the worst - parts were expensive and my mechanic took a long time on the jobs so even in the short time I owned it every bill was £500+.

I gave it a clean and went for a drive (I need to lose the roof, I know) - it's so comfortable as a hardtop coupe up to pretty high speeds.

Looks great 0a. I confess, I really miss it. The 190E is special, but not really in the same vein!

To add insult to injury, the XJS I've had my eye on has sold. The hankering goes on...

Well I really want a 190! I won't be letting the 500SL go soon though - it's being looked after and the few, non critical, issues sorted. 90% of the time it's in a multi storey car park or garage - I love it so much!

I did have to ask myself how fast 255kph is today - it's not a slow car above 100mph.

By the way if you are looking at an XJS, why not consider an r129 500SL - far better cars. laugh

Suspect it's something worse as they are visible in the auction pictures (which were the same pictures Haynes was using all last year):

Oa/CdeG, the 500 SL looks superb in those colours. I'm not surprised it's missed.

Would the car have had the 15 hole alloys originally? It's a '91 car. The spare is a 15 hole.

I did think about removing the personal plate, but looking at the history it's been A2 VPE since it got back to the UK from Hong Kong - I'm not a personal plate man, but I like history, so it will stay with the car.

I'll just turn to my May 1991 pricelist... 15 hole wheels were standard; 8 hole wheels were an option at the princely sum of £175.10.

The 15 holes are always available on Ebay for little dosh and the tyres are the same size. I too prefer the 15 hole wheel: it's classic Merc, innit? I too think private plates are a bit wk, but then I have two of them and I'm always mulling a third (E30 OTD is available and would suit my 124, illegally spaced as E300 TD). They're just a bit of fun. Who cares?

My recently acquired SL500. Would look nice next to Oa's.
Really enjoying her at the moment, except for a rather large bill for a new window regulator and motor. Oh well, just hope there is nothing else looming.

Barge purchase! 1998 Mercedes-Benz CL420 (C140), silver, black nappa leather, 90,000 miles, partial history, new MoT. Lovely to drive, very 'wafty', very quiet, by no means perfect cosmetically but no rust, everything works, including the soft close and the climate control is perfect.

Just under thread budget (started at thread lower limit but gentle negotiation resulted in a bank note of change), I am suitably impressed.

Pics to follow shortly and a new thread in reader's cars.
What? £950!!!??? For a 1998 CL420 with sub-100k miles? That is amazing, isn't it? Pictures required, please. The 420 is reputedly the most economical 140...
Hang on.

For some reason I misread that and thought we were talking £4.Xk (briefly noting that these are fetching more money than I remember). Please tell us more, and congratulations!
Apologies for the delay, been busier than usual. I've driven about 250 miles in it so far and it's been a very positive experience. As mentioned, it's not perfect but its faults are of the minor variety, e.g. outside temperature gauge stuck at +58C, parking scrape on the front bumper, steering wheel offset. I'll go in to more detail when I start a reader's cars thread. It has no rust that I can find, engine is excellent, gearbox fine, interior is nearly perfect bar a cracked speaker grille in the door.

Wow that's lovely. Waft around with the windows down in the sun, that's living the dream that is! cloud9

How does it sound? I would be tempted to unleash just a tad of subtle burble by messing about with the exhaust if it's silent.

Acid wheel cleaner left on too long and now etched I'd guess

Looks fab. I prefer it as a coupe personally but then I'm not keen on convertibles.

My 1991 car has 8 holes including the spare. I have no reason to think they've been changed since the car left the factory as almost everything is documented.

That CL is lovely, what a steal!

0a, the SL looks great! I went along to this today https://www.erskine.org.uk/events/classic-cars-ers... great day out, and all for a good cause. Lovely selection of cars, including a few nice r107's, one r129 (320) and one w124 (230).
