Straight looking W124 230E for 400 quid.... looks remarkably similar to my old one.

One owner from new...just WOW. Pity the MoT is due in 10 days' time...
This needs saving. 172k probably getting on average miles for 25 year old 124s now!Best engine, best colour, 7 seat, one owner? Perfect. Needs a few grand spending to bring it back but definitely classic waft.
Allegedly 50k mile BX 1.6 but with full leather.... £1195 but in a hurry to sell (and at that price...!)

Mini-barge lifted from the retro thread. Under-budget, but a few jobs to do should lift it into here.
I may, allegedly, have made contact with vendor.Ray Singh said:

Shame it is a catd - but pictures of damage do not look too bad and no history.

What was that I was saying only a couple of days and a few pages ago?!
But, the car is sold already.
I wonder to whom . . . . . .
(Flight and ferry booked for 19 Aug)
I just can't help myself.
Regarding later CL and SLs, I was talking to my mechanic about them today. He now maintains several of these, and said that they are not particularly expensive to keep so long as you avoid main dealers, and rip off mechanics. They are large numbers being broken for fairly minor issues, so he sources second hand parts or has refurbed. In fact he said it upset him that people get ripped off trying to keep them going!

If you took that CL to a main dealer to do the oil cooler job; You'd probably pay more in parts and labour than you would for the car in the first place.
You're absolutely right of course, and that probably applies to lots of jobs on lots of cars in the thread. The key of course is to never darken the door of a main dealer unless it's for a part you can't get elsewhere.
Mini-Barge update.
A little while back I bought a rather fetching Mercedes 190E, ostensibly as a family runabout and city car. The plan - insofar as there is ever a plan in this place - was for it to become the family runabout. All was fine in theory, but some of you may recall that the car's reception wasn't entirely positive, and various female members of famille deGaulle demonstrated a somewhat unbecoming emotional reaction. And not in a good way.
Luckily, the motoring gods conspired to help me remove the festering sore from their sight and consciousness. Less luckily, this involved a 'failure-to-proceed' experience. Luckily it was me in the car at the time. Unluckily, despite me thinking I'd managed to get away with it by keeping it secret, my mechanic chap inadvertently dobbed me in it, so the girls found out. And mocked. Without mercy and without respite.
Anyway, absence can be helpful. In the way that you introduced that unsuitable girlfriend to your smart relatives only once, and then hoped they'd forget her, the 190's absence at the home of my mechanic (whilst he disappeared on a refereeing trip to the US) allowed the tears to dry and the emotions to settle. Peace was restored; I was off the hook.
And then, hurrah, today the car was returned. The culprit was the fuel pump relay, since replaced, and the expert gave the whole thing a decent going-over. The only other thing that needed doing was a new windscreen wiper, so I'm feeling as though some shed Karmic-balance has been restored.
The next job is going to be a bit of bucket and sponge sudsy-love, and I'll replace the cheap nasty tyres with something more mainstream before the autumn, but for now I shall rejoice in the smug glow of knowing I was right all along. At least I will until madame returns next week.
Here it is, in all its unwashed green and tan glory. It was in thread budget, but only just. It's a nice way to travel.

CDG, thanks for sorting that issue for when I take it off your hands
A quick question on A2 VPE - can you remember if the A/C not working was diagnosed as a broken compressor? I am forming a job list for Tommy next week.
After driving about for a bit in the 300E today I am really looking forward to a long run in it over the weekend - there is definitely something special about W124s. For some reason I keep looking at that £400 light green one further up the page. I could have it collected and delivered to my mechanic to fettle. It's a disease!
I have just ordered a dark blue set of mats for the 500SL from http://www.specialvehicle.co.uk/ - the set I ordered from them almost 3 years ago have done great service in the W124. The ones that are in there at the moment move about which is rather annoying.
The SL being inspected today - note the excellent photography skills!

Someone has ended up buying this for 5K....
I was going to go and view it today but bailed when the seller said he had had another offer for 5K and would I be able to better it.
In fairness to the seller he was prepared to hang on to it until I'd had a chance to view but in the end it was more than I'd want to pay.
If it had been a sport I'd have been all over it though.
I wonder if it will reappear for sale elsewhere...?I was going to go and view it today but bailed when the seller said he had had another offer for 5K and would I be able to better it.

I think its worth every penny of £5k.

I am coming around to the view that a 4 cylinder 190 at one end of the collection would be nicely balanced by a 12 cylinder Mercedes of some description at the other end.
Perhaps a 140 LWB?
I agree with the sentiment. Perhaps a 140 LWB?
For me though, I reckon a 4 cyl 190, a 6 cyl estate, with a 12 cyl XJS as the self-indulgent plaything. If I had to have an 8 cyl to collect the set, I'd like the SL back please, once you've made it perfect.

I never intend to make any of my cars perfect - I merely want it such that I could jump in them and do 10,000 miles without anything needing doing, with the next priority being how they drive. My W124 must be the best driving rusty W124 out there. I will get R129's "The Man" on the case with the paint at some point in the future though. I do like the idea of a 12 cylinder Jaguar. However as a mechanically hopeless person old mercs provide me with a reassuring safe sanctuary of good reliability and cheap parts. I'm a bit scared by old jags to be honest (however I love the look of them!).

Yum indeed.
Luckily, as his last line makes clear, there's 'no admin fee'. Good job - anyone that adds an admin fee can fk right off.
I decided not to follow the CdeG 190e path for my daughter and bought a Golf (diesel - apologies) for her. Dealer springs the £60 admin fee as I'm about to sign. Cue hysterics and flouncing out - I'll pay the admin fee and they will fill the tank and tax it (£30 ) so honours even. Why, oh why?! Luckily, as his last line makes clear, there's 'no admin fee'. Good job - anyone that adds an admin fee can fk right off.

It's infuriating, isn't it? Just gets peoples back up.More importantly though, just promise me you'll keep that sensible purchase for your daughter to yourself, ok? If my brood discover that not everyone does in a motoring sense to their kids what I've done to mine, I'm doomed.

S124 arrived this afternoon - and it seems pretty lovely.
Being a 12v diesel, it's a slow old thing, but it is perfect for wafting around in - feels solid and well built, and no issues yet. Electric aerial and sunroof both surprisingly fully operational!
